Wynnum Manly were left short on numbers to field teams against Wests due to the mullet running in Moreton Bay

The fishing industry was blamed for Wynnum Manly Rugby League club’s inability to field teams in yesterday’s Brisbane Rugby League fixtures.

A club official said yesterday, that a big percentage of the playing members are professional fisherman who spend from Monday to Thursday “down the bay.”

Wynnum Manly forfeited all three senior grade games to Western Suburbs yesterday.  Under the Brisbane Rugby League constitution, Wests will be awarded a win by 20 points to nil.

Wests, who are now equal competition leaders in first grade with Norths and Souths, contend that on current form they could have beaten Wynnum Manly by a 40 point margin.  Where clubs have equal premiership competition points, semi-final placings for the first four teams are decided on scoring averages.  Wests could miss the advantage of being first or second by Wynnum Manly’s failure to play yesterday.
