Round 1 – 28/3/65
Wynnum Manly 35 d Easts 13 (Langlands Park)
A 31 point scoring ‘feast’ by Wynnum Manly in the second half enabled the Baysiders to beat Easts 35-13 at Langlands Park yesterday. One of the biggest crowds seen in years at Langlands Park saw Clive Churchill’s first club side in Brisbane since 1959.
Although Easts finished the game with 11 men, they had no counter to the backing up of Wynnum Manly. Wynnum Manly’s second half recovery was headed by the boot of their brilliant young five-eighth, Morrie Dent. Dent had a personal total of 24 points – nine goals and two tries.
With the wind a their backs in the first half, Easts rattled up a 11-4 lead, with fullback Max Henderson, halfback Ken Haimes and captain Ben Wall showing out. After the break Wynnum Manly applied pressure with Dent, Lionel Morgan and Billy McDermott, throwing the ball about and stepping out of week tackles. Several times Morgan came in from his wing and stepped through the Easts defence to send supports racing over the line.
Scorers: Wynnum Manly 35 (M.Dent 2, B.Coutts, Ross Chapman, L.Morgan tries, Dent 9, Morgan goals) defeated Easts 13 (B.Wall try, M.Henderson 5 goals)
Round 2 – 04/4/65
Wynnum Manly 21 d Souths 12 (Davies Park)
Wynnum Manly produced sparkling attacking football to down Souths 21-12 at Davies Park yesterday. Despite the loss of skipper Lionel Morgan halfway through the first half and a shortage of ball from the scrums, Wynnum Manly kept their line intact. Souths only points came from the boot of fullback Stan McDonald, who landed six goals from seven attempts.
Wynnum centres Ross Chapman and Bill McDermott cut holes in the defence which Morgan and Harry Muir exploited to the full. Five-eighth Morrie Dent’s usually reliable boot failed and he landed only three goals from seven attempts. Lock Alan Monaghan took over the kicking but could only get three goals from six kicks. Wynnum Manly’s smallish halfback Brian Paroz proved an effective link, while Monaghan had a good game.
Despite a vast majority of the scrums, 16-8, from hooker Adrian Baggio, Souths failed to capitalise on their advantage, their backs standing to flat. Five-eighth Ron Dutton defended well, while in the forwards Baggio, Trevor Niebling, and lock Stan Gayton stood out.
Scorers: Wynnum Manly 21 (L.Morgan, H.Muir, B.Paroz tries, A.Monaghan 3, M.Dent 3 goals) defeated Souths 12 (S.McDonald 6 goals).
Round 3 – 11/4/65
Wynnum Manly 23 d Wests 19 (Lang Park)
Wynnum-Manly emerged as the only undefeated team after three rounds in Brisbane Club Rugby League when they beat Wests by 23-19 in an exciting finish at Lang Park yesterday. The upsets indicate another “hard to pick” season and Wynnum-Manly’s style, under the coaching of former international winger Lionel Morgan, suggests a strong challenge from the Baysiders for premiership.
Wynnum-Manly with few seasoned first grade players, chopped Wests defence to mincemeat in the first half to take a 12-0 lead before Wests got settled. Young centre Ross Chapman, playing in his first A-grade season, scored two brilliant tries and set up another for winger Harry Muir to give Wynnum-Manly a 19-5 lead at halftime. Wynnum-Manly forwards with Graham Curtis and Ross McIntosh outstanding pummelled Wests defence with strong running off the rucks and good backing up.
Morrie Dent was unavailable through injury and Wynnum-Manly’s reorganised halves, with Brian Scott working the scrums and Brian Paroz at five-eighth ran sharply and tested Wests’ backline defence. Wests’ hooker, Bob Doyle, was sent off the field in the second half for an illegal tackle and Wynnum-Manly’s hooker, Bob Griffin, was sent off for allegedly consistently breaking the rules. At one stage Wynnum-Manly had only 10 men on the field and Wests had 11. Curtis and Muir were off injured from Wynnum-Manly, and Bowman from Wests. Earlier Reg Cannon, Wests’ lock, was replaced by Bowman through injury.
Scorers: Wynnum Manly 23 (R.Chapman 2, H.Muir tries, L.Morgan 7 goals) defeated Wests 19 (G.Manson 2, T.Haggett tries, B.Muir 4, R.Cannon goals).
Round 4 – 18/4/65
Wynnum Manly 32 d Redcliffe 9 (Lang Park)
Wynnum-Manly Rugby League team retained its undefeated record when it beat Redcliffe by the surprising margin of 32-9 in the fourth fixture round at Lang Park yesterday. The game was more competitive than the final scores suggest. Wynnum-Manly finished full of running and piled on the points late in the game.
Wynnum-Manly’s captain-coach, Lionel Morgan, sealed his team’s win with a sneak intercept near his own 25 yard line and a 70 yard dodging run to score a try late in the second half. At that stage, Redcliffe trailing 6-17 were attacking strongly under the rallying influence of captain-coach Henry Holloway and the energetic play of Col Weier, Rowan McNamara, Bob Lawson and Arthur Beetson.
Five-eighth Morrie Dent converted both tries and finished with a personal tally of 13 points from a try and five goals. Ross McIntosh, who played prop for most of the match for Wynnum-Manly, was the most energetic player on the field. He is a constant source of worry to opposing teams in attack and defence. Centre Ross Chapman had a quieter game under appalling defence by Redcliffe, but he seized his opportunities well and his second half try came from a clever sidestep and a speedy burst.
Scorers: Wynnum Manly 32 (A.Monaghan 2, M.Dent, B.Scott, L.Morgan, R.Chapman tries, M.Dent 5, A.Monaghan, L.Morgan goals) defeated Redcliffe 9 (H.Holloway, N.McLean, S.Northey tries).
Round 5 – 26/4/65
F/Valley 22 d Wynnum Manly 12 (Lang Park)
Valleys Rugby League team brought Wynnum-Manly’s winning run to a halt yesterday when they proved too well organised. It was one of the best matches seen at Lang Park this season. Wynnum-Manly had command early in the match and led by 7-0 at 16 minutes.
Clever backline play by five-eighth Morrie Dent, centre Ross Chapman and an occasional burst by Bill McDermott repeatedly took play into Valley’s defence zone against their goal line. It was Dent who shot through a narrow gap to open up the way for the first try for Chapman with McDermott the link between.
Meanwhile, forwards Brian Austin, Bob Griffin, Ross McIntosh and Graham Curtis hammered home the advantage given by the backs and Valleys defence had top work overtime to hold them out from more tries. There was also the clever switching of the attack in close by Des Mannion, Ross Threlfo, White and Oliveria which helped. This tended to break up Wynnum-Manly’s defence pattern.
I thought Lionel Morgan erred in moving in to centre from wing in the second half, particularly as it meant Ross Chapman being wasted on the wing. Chapman is a player who can score tries from seemingly impossible positions.
Scorers: Valleys 22 (L.Murphy, M.Norris, R.Gilbank, J.Paskins tries, J.Paskins 5 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 12 (R.Chapman 2 tries, M.Dent 3 goals)
Round 6 – 01/5/65
P/Brothers 23 d Wynnum Manly 9 (Lang Park)
Brothers Rugby League team scored its fourth successive win with a 23-9 victory over glamour team Wynnum-Manly at Lang Park yesterday. They never looked in doubt after winning most of the ball in the second half. Brothers ran on to score five tries to only one to Wynnum.
Wynnum had every chance in the first half and early in the second half when they saw plenty of the ball. Their liking for quick passing and consistent backing-up won applause from the crowd, but they could not penetrate Brothers’ solid defence. Captain and international prop, Peter Gallagher, playing his first match in three weeks, took things easy but still made the difference in Brothers’ attack. Brothers’ star five-eighth Barry Dowling did not have such a bright match although his outside men saw plenty of the ball.
For the Wynnum-Manly second-rower Graham Curtis was always a hard worker. Early season stars, five eighth Morrie Dent, and centre, Ross Chapman was not given an inch to move by Brothers’ defence. Cavanagh was outstanding with the ball and threw out a continual challenge to all attacks with his sound defence. Halfback John Smith had one of his best matches ever and winger Neil Porter showed he is learning quickly how to beat defence. He scored two very good corner tries.
Scorers: Brothers 23 (N.Porter 2, G.Balkin, J.Smith, N.Cavanagh tries, Cavanagh 4 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly (penalty try, L.Morgan 2, M.Dent goals.
Round 7 – 09/5/65
Norths 22 d Wynnum Manly 12 (Oxenham Park)
Norths Rugby League premiers scored a patchy 22-12 win over Wynnum Manly at Oxenham Park in the final match of the first round of B.R.L. fixtures. The match was marred by seemingly endless bad passing and bad handling. Most Norths players at some time during the match, lost the ball in tackles and on more than half a dozen occasions allowed Wynnum Manly captain-coach Lionel Morgan to steal the ball.
Norths backs Henry Hegarty (two tries) and Howard Whitaker (one try, were the danger men and given good service by consistent halfback Jim Hannam. Norths tireless hooker Elwyn Walters, was the pick of the premiers pack, but team mate Brisbane second rower, Johnny Bates, had one of the worst days. Bates, who looked jaded, dropped several easy passes and generally failed to produce his usually vigorous speed.
Walters apart from solid defence, was a threat in attack and set up a great try for winger Whitaker. He crashed through the defence and ran almost 35 yards, before cleverly drawing the fullback to send Whitaker over unopposed. Outstanding player for Wynnum was Morrie Dent who was moved into the centres from five-eighth for this match. Dent scored his best individual try for the match, when he flashed past Harry Bates, Hegarty and Whitaker.
In the forwards second rower Graham Curtis stuck to the hard rucking and close tackling and before hooker Brian Austin went “looking for” opponents in the second half he was a match for any forward on the ground. Austin, broke even 11-all with Walters, but Wynnum Manly had the majority of possession in both halves by courtesy of Norths bad handling. Wynnum five-eighth Brian Paroz had a sound match, giving reliable service to his backline.
Scorers: Norths 22 (H.Hegarty 2, H.Whitaker, P.Klienans tries, J.Hannam 5 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 12 (P.Thomson, M.Dent tries, A.Monaghan 3 goals).
Round 8 – 23/5/65
Wynnum Manly 13 d Easts 5 (Langlands Park)
Wynnum Manly defeated East in a brawling match at Langlands Park yesterday, each side scoring only one try. Repeated scrum infringements forced referee Ron Milson to penalise both sides severely. There were frequently outbreaks of fighting. Minutes before fulltime Wynnum Manly halfback Brian Scott was sent off the field. At halftime the score was 2-all, following penalty kicks by Easts fullback Max Henderson and Wynnum Manly winger Lionel Morgan. Late in the first half, Easts lost their hooker Reg Webster, with injuries.
The Wynnum Manly backline was superior in attack, but was frustrated by strong cover defence from forwards Merv Verrenkamp, Graham Ambrose, Ben Wall and winger Bill Knobel. Knobel’s best effort came when he sprinted across field to tackle centre Morrie Dent before he could score a corner try. Wynnum Manly’s try was scored by Morgan, after a team mate had played the ball inside Easts 25-yard line. Morgan received the pass and crashed past three forwards.
Henderson scored Easts try late in the second half when he quickly followed an up-and-under in the Wynnum Manly territory.
Scorers: Wynnum Manly 13 (L.Morgan try, M.Dent 4 goals) defeated Easts 5 (M.Henderson try, goal).
Round 9 – 30/5/65
Souths 28 d Wynnum Manly 9 (Davies Park)
Coach Cyril Connell pre-match pep talk infused Souths with the will to win yesterdays Rugby League at Davies Park. Souths beat the higher-rated Wynnum Manly, with non stop tackling and determined attacks. Connell told Souths they had been beaten recently because of early lapses of concentration.
The team responded and Wynnum Manly did not find a chink in their armour until 10 minutes from fulltime. Stan McDonald moved to the centres, was magnificent for Souths with eight goals from ten attempts, a try and solid defence. McDonalds 19 points takes him to 76 points, the highest in the Brisbane club play this season. McDonald’s kicking and a Trevor Niebling try took Souths to a 13-2 halftime lead.
In the second half Souths outstayed Wynnum Manly and handled surely for tries by Trevor Gayler, Brendon Nolan and McDonald. Winger Gayler, who did the lead up work for Niebling’s try, crossed after deceiving the defence with a neat change of pace.
Scorers: Souths 28 (T.Niebling, B.Nolan, T.Gayler, S.McDonald tries, S.McDonald 8 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 9 (B.Hatch try, M.Dent 3 goals).
Round 10 – 06/6/65
Wests 25 d Wynnum Manly 8 (Lang Park)
Wests Rugby League halfback, Ken Wallace, gave the best goal kicking display of the season when he landed eight from 11 attempts to give his team a 25-8 win over Wynnum Manly at Lang Park. Those goals took Wallace’s total points to 52 in four games for Wests first grade. Wallace 19, was promoted to first grade after Barry Muir injured his knee and has proved a capable replacement as well as a top goal kicker. He has received notice of his call up for two years Army National Service, for which he will leave on June 28th.
In a vigorous forward clash Wests held their own, with Barry Conroy defending most consistently. For the Baysiders, Brian Austin was best in the midfield skirmishes, while Brian Hatch did some great cover defending. Among the backs, Wynnum Manly’s five-eighth, Brian Paroz, was the hardest worker in defence. Centre Gary Manson scored a brilliant try for Wests when he sliced the defence at halfway and out sped opponents over 50 yards to touchdown between the posts. But his opponent, Ross Chapman, squared accounts by beating Manson to score well.
Four goals by Wallace and tries by Eddie Damarco and Frank Duncan gave Wests a halftime lead of 14-3, after Brian Austin had crossed for Wynnum Manly. Wynnum Manly took the field without Morrie Dent, who was nursing an injury. Then they lost Lionel Morgan, John Oliver and Allan Thurlow during the match and finished with 12 men.
Scorers: Wests 25 (E.Demarco, G.Manson, F.Duncan tries, F.Wallace 8 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 8 (B.Austin, R.Chapman tries, H.Horner goal)
Round 11 – 13/6/65
Redcliffe 32 d Wynnum Manly 8 (Lang Park)
Redcliffe Rugby League backline turned on some spectacular play to score six tries in their 32-8 win over Wynnum Manly at Lang Park yesterday. Three of there four tries had a superb touch of long passing, top speed attack from halfbacks through to wingers. Centres Stewart Northey and Trevor Harken dovetailed in the best centre combination of the season. They loom a threat to any team while halves Des Parkes and John Treeby feed them so well. Winger Kevin Yow Yeh also hit top form, scoring two splendid tries.
Unfortunately there were too few such movements. Generally it was an untidy match, with Wynnum Manly a disorganised team showing little skill. To the Baysiders credit, most of them kept on trying, and there were some good tacklers among them. Wynnum Manly already hit by injuries suffered more yesterday, when hooker Brian Austin and fullback Barry Coutts were assisted from the field in the second half. They finished the half with 11 men.
Redcliffe also finished a man short, after captain-coach Henry Holloway retired with a cut under the eye, the result of a powerful uppercut by Harry Muir, while Holloway was engaged in a scuffle with Lionel Morgan.
Scorers: Redcliffe 32 (K.Yow Yeh 2, S.Northey, K.Welsh, J.Treeby, T.Harken tries, Holloway 6, Northey goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 8 (H.Muir, B.Kendall tries, M.Dent goal).
Round 12 – 20/6/65
F/Valley 8 d Wynnum Manly 4 (Neumann Oval)
Valleys had their third try-less gam in a row when they scrapped to an 8-4 win over Wynnum Manly in yesterday Rugby League at Neumann Oval yesterday. Jim Paskins kicked four goals from eight attempts to be Valleys lone scorer. Paskins had notched all the points with his boot, in Valleys two previous games, a 20-4 loss to Easts and a 17-8 defeat to Brothers.
Valleys best patches came when Kevin Olivera sent Don Lind, Les Glover and Ross Therlfo close to a try and late in the second half when Glover sliced the defence. Olivera dropped by Valleys, went on when les Murphy twisted his leg in the first session. He had played in reserve grade and had a sound A Grade game. Lind was tireless in the Valleys pack and Glover switched from Fullback to centre, added more to the Valleys backline. For Wynnum Manly second rower Graham Curtis and five-eighth Brian Paroz worked hard.
Scorers: Valleys 8 (J.Paskins 4 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 4 (D.Smith, A.Monaghan goals).
Round 13 – 27/6/65
P/Brothers 14 d Wynnum Manly 10 (Corbett Park)
Brothers came from behind to score a 14-10 win over Wynnum Manly in an exciting match at Corbett Park yesterday. Brothers led by prop Peter Gallagher, scored two second half tries to overcome Wynnum’s first half lead of 10-6.
Wynnum looked superior in the first half, when second rowers Peter Thomson and Graham Curtis and prop Ron Wittenberg did much damage in attack, supported by strong running centre Billy McDermott. Wittenberg continually upset Brothers with his tough play, but in the second half Brother forwards gained control.
Inspired by lock Gavin McLaughlin, hooker Arthur Connell and Gallagher paved the way for Brothers revival.
Scorers: Brothers 14 (A.Connell, P.Gallahger tries, D.Smith 4 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 10 (R.Chapman, P.Thomson tries, L.Morgan 2 goals).
Round 14 – 04/7/65
Wynnum Manly 20 d Norths 13 (Langlands Park)
Wynnum Manly’s teamwork brought them a 20-13 win over Norths at Langlands Park yesterday. The Baysiders scored four tries to Norths three, although they lost 15 out of 19 scrums. Centre Billy McDermott and forwards Peter Thomson and Ron Wittenberg were responsible for Wynnum Manly’s co-ordination and were prominent in creating breaks. Scores were 13-2 at halftime in Wynnum Manly’s favour.
Norths scored first with a penalty by halfback Jim Hannam. Then attacking in their own territory, they mishandled. McDermott retrieved and passed to centre Ross Chapman, who dived over for a try. Forward Alan Monaghan converted. The try was followed by two more from Thomson, one from a dummy half run and the other by breaking through a gap in midfield. Monaghan, who converted, later hurt his leg and was replaced by Ivan Udowiki, who kicked two goals. Wynnum Manly’s Keith Smith, playing his first A grade match, scored a try perfectly set up by McDermott.
Norths tries came from centres Howard Whitaker and Peter Kleinhans and forward Johnny Bates. Whitaker and Ray Cattanach combined well, and fullback Harry bates penetration in the second half was magnificent. Wynnum Manly’s fullback John Oliver and forward David Burns were later admitted to hospital with head injuries.
Scorers: Wynnum Manly 20 (P.Thomson 2, R.Chapman, K.Smith tries, I.Udowiki 2, A.Monaghan 2 goals) defeated Norths 13 (H.Whitaker, P.Kleinhans, H.Bates tries, J.Hannam 2 goals).
Round 15 – 10/7/65
Easts 13 d Wynnum Manly 9 (Lang Park)
Brisbane Rugby League tailenders Easts got off the floor for a tough and at times exciting win over Wynnum Manly at Lang Park yesterday. Easts won 13-9 and can thank two goals by fullback, Max Henderson, for the win. Both team scored three tries, and Wynnum Manly’s lack of a safe goal kicker cost them the match.
The game had its share of bad spots, mainly through poor handling and defence, but there were some outstanding individuals and a lot of excitement in the closing stages. One of the stars of the match was rugged Wynnum Manly prop Ron Wittenberg, who all but won the match with his vigorous running. In the first half he crashed Easts defenders with bruising force, to make the breaks for long runs for himself and his supporters. He set up a try for another Wynnum Manly star, Ross Chapman, with one such crashing run. Chapman had a fine match a menaced Easts with his speed and deception whenever he handled.
However, the centre of the day was Easts importation, Jeff Denman. Denman scored a classic try with a great sideline run and a flashing change of pace to put Easts on the road to recovery late in the second half.
With scrum possession even, the match took a seesawing action. Wynnum Manly led at halftime 6-2 and looked the better side. But Easts reorganised in the second half and came from down 5-9 with 19 minutes to go to overhaul Wynnum Manly. Wynnum Manly were pressing at the ‘death,’ but could not get possession. Apart from Denman Easts best players were halfback Ken Haimes, lock Bill Thistlewaite and Ben Wall.
Scorers: Easts 13 (J.Denman, B.Thistlewaite, M.Nicholson tries, M.Henderson 2 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 9 (R.Chapman, P.Thomson, B.Austin tries).
Round 16 – 18/7/65
Wynnum Manly 23 d Souths 7 (Lang Park)
Wynnum Manly played with too much drive and determination for Souths at Lang Park yesterday to beat them by 23-7 in a disappointing match. The Baysiders always looked the stronger side, although Souths led by 5-3 at halftime. This was the result of a fine try by winger Trevor Gayler, who outpaced the opposition over 65 yards to score between the goal-posts.
The consistency of the Wynnum Manly forwards in their driving runs down the middle put them on top 10 minutes after halftime, and Souths could not comeback. Young winger Keith Smith scored two tries for Wynnum Manly and showed that he knows where to go. His alertness and sudden takeoff from a standing start put him right through Souths defenders for his first try. Wynnum Manly’s other winger, Allan Thurlow also showed lots of speed and with a little more luck could have scored twice.
It was a rugged battle in the first half. Ron Wittenberg (Wynnum Manly) and Jim Murdoch (Souths) clashed and fists flew among about eight players in a brief flare up. Wittenberg did not resume in the second half because of a leg injury.
Souths second rowers Paul Bennett and Brendon Nolan, were prominent in crashing and Adrian Baggio was consistent tackler. But the persistent foraging of Graham Curtis, Harry Horner, Ross McIntosh and Brian Austin for the Baysiders wore down Souths resistance in the second half. Lock Brian Hatch had some brilliant patches for Wynnum Manly, but I thought the hardest worker for the 80 minutes was halfback Brian Paris. Souths best players were Ron Dutton and Alan West.
Scorers: Wynnum Manly 23 (K.Smith 2, R.McIntosh, B.Austin, H.Muir tries, M.Dent 4 goals) defeated Souths 7 (T.Gayler try, S.McDonald 2 goals).
Round 17 – 25/7/65
Redcliffe 13 d Wynnum Manly 12 (Langlands Park)
An unsuccessful attempt at a difficult penalty goal after the full-time siren cost Wynnum-Manly their Rugby League match against Redcliffe at Langlands Park yesterday. Redcliffe won 13-12 after leading 10-5 at half time. Wynnum-Manly’s five-eighth Morrie Dent took the kick which narrowly missed the posts from close to touch. Earlier he had kicked three goals.
The match was rugged resulting in occasional brawls. Wynnum-Manly’s clever centre Billy McDermott was sent off early in the first half for fighting. McDermott set up the first try, scored by winger Keith Smith. Ivan Udowiki, who replaced fullback John Oliver in the second half, scored Wynnum-Manly’s second try.
Redcliffe played with real fire and teamwork in the first half, forward Arthur Beetson starring in a spectacular try.
Scorers: Redcliffe 13 (A.Beetson, T.Gaylard, N.McLean try, S.Northey 2 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 12 (K.Smith, I.Udowiki tries, M.Dent 3 goals).
Round 18 – 01/8/65
Wests 10 d Wynnum Manly 9 (Neumann Oval)
Wests Rugby League team scored a 10-9 victory over Wynnum Manly after a see-sawing match at Neumann Oval yesterday. The match was never inspiring, but was notable for two reasons – the big-hearted display of hard running forward Frank Duncan and the return to form of Test halfback Barry Muir. Duncan ran himself to complete exhaustion and passed the ball when he had a team mate in support. Duncan was used to the maximum as an attacking machine and got his team out of many a tight spot.
Muir played his match since his return from injury and was always a big worry to Wynnum Manly. Former State centre Col Weiss played a great match at his new position, lock and will be a handful for any pack pitted against Wests. Wests looked the better side from the start. Their two tries were clean cut and their attack always looked more constructive.
Wynnum scored one try, when promising centre Ross Chapman took an intercept to score. But Wynnum’s general play did not match that of Wests. Wests established their superiority in the first ten minutes of the second half when they scored two tries. Wynnum have smart players in halfback Brian Paroz and second rower Ross McIntosh.
Scorers: Wests 10 () defeated Wynnum Manly 9 (Ross Chapman try, 3 goals).
Round 19 – 07/8/65
Wynnum Manly 14 d F/Valley 10 (Lang Park)
Injury-hit Wynnum-Manly Rugby League team downed competition leaders, Valleys, by 14-10 in an exciting match at Lang Park yesterday. The Baysiders, who have an injury list nearly as long as the club’s register, got together a patched up team which played an attractive open style of football and thoroughly deserved the win.
Centre Ross Chapman, Bill McDermott, five-eighth Morrie Dent and lock Brian Hatch punched holes in a lethargic Valley backline defence. Forwards Peter Thompson and Ross McIntosh tireless for 80 minutes, split Valleys up midfield and fresh Graham Curtis piled on the agony in the second half when he replaced Harry Horner. Young hooker Tommy Ashcroft and Thompson were great in cover defence with halfback Ivan Udowika backing them up splendidly.
Wynnum-Manly started like winners with Hatch, Chapman and Dent beating first-up tacklers every time. Their strong defence kept the over-confident Valleys out for 27 minutes, and with luck, it would have been the Baysiders that opened the scoring. It was the best display I have seen from the Baysiders this season. Their open, long-passing style of play brought tries by the right men – two each by wingers Keith Smith and Morris Marrinon.
Chapman gave another exciting display in the centre. Quick to pounce on the loose ball and smart off the mark he live up to the promise he showed early in his season before he was injured.
It was a remarkable fact that Chapman gave the last pass for every Wynnum-Manly try. He was directly responsible for the first three, setting up openings for his wingers with strong running bursts in which he beat the defence. For the forth, he classically drew in the opposition winger and sent his own many over with a quick, sure pass. Halfback Ross Threlfo turned in another good game, with some brilliant patches of attack and very game defence. Valleys fullback Jim Paskins, was off the line with his goal kicking and landed only two from six attempts.
Scorers: Wynnum Manly 14 (M.Marrinon 2, K.Smith 2 tries, M.Dent 2 goals) defeated Valleys 10 (Glover, R.Gilbank tries, J.Paskins 2 goals).
Round 20 – 15/8/65
P/Brothers 29 d Wynnum Manly 9 (Lang Park)
Rugby League players Ron Wittenberg (Wynnum-Manly) and Des Smith (Brothers) were sent off the field for fighting at Lang Park yesterday, which Brothers won by 29-9.
Brothers showed some good attacking from in the first half, and won well, scoring five tries to one. Wittenberg’s scuffle with Smith cost his team a try. While the two players were swapping punches, Wynnum-Manly’s centre Ross Chapman beat three tacklers to go over near the goal posts.
Referee Don Lancashire notified “dead ball” where Chapman had crossed, interviewed Wittenberg and Smith, sent them off and then disallowed Chapman’s try. Wittenberg has previously been cautioned by Lancashire for some blatant illegalities.
Wynnum-Manly showed some glimpses of the form which gave them a win over Valleys last weekend. But they were disorganised when forced to take the field without centre Bill McDermott and five-eighth Morrie Dent, who had not recovered from injuries.
Scorers: Brothers 29 (K.Craven 2, J.Dwyer, B.Dowling, J.Lohman tries, N.Cavanagh 6, Dowling goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 9 (B.Hatch try, I.Udowiki 3 goals).
Round 21 – 22/8/65
Norths 31 d Wynnum Manly 17 (Oxenham Park)
Flying Fonda Metassa excelled himself by scoring three tries to force equal lead in the Brisbane Rugby League try-scoring race at Oxenham Park yesterday. Metassa, who shares Brisbane’s top try scoring with Valleys’ Robin Gilbank, (20 tries each) starred in Norths 31-17 win over Wynnum-Manly in the last fixture round.
Wynnum-Manly fought all the way, but could not match the speed of Norths, particularly in the forwards. Bad passing marred Norths attack. Although Wynnum lost the scrums to Norths’ hooker Les Geeves, they still had a fair share of the ball from Norths’ stray passes. Several of Norths’ backs looked short of condition and were left blowing towards the end of the match. Worst of there were Henry Hegarty, Mal Breen and Harry Bates. However, all played well with Harry Bates in great attacking form and solid in defence.
Lock Johnny Bates, back from four weeks injury, played soundly early and appears to be ready for a top semi final. Wynnum Manly halves Ivan Udowika and Brian Paroz were sound while Peter Thompson and Ross McIntosh were the pick of the forwards.
Big prop Don Simpson shattered Wynnum defence with hard running in an encouraging semi-final preview and was well supported by Poulsen and Max Baldwin. Backs Ross Chapman and Morrie Dent starred for Wynnum and between them scored all of their team’s points – Chapman, two nice tries and Dent a try and four goals.
Scorers: Norths 31 (F.Metassa 3, H.Hegarty, R.Cattanach, J.Bates, P.Hall tries, R.Poulsen 4, J.Hannam goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 17 (R.Chapman 2, M.Dent tries, Dent 4 goals)
