Orchard played well for Redcliffe but was well contained by Isona Toga the ex St. George player who showed he will be a force to be reckoned with in the front row.  Captain Nev Hornery showed once again that his leadership will be invaluable to the Seagulls.  Bob Warren to who made his A Grade debut showed plenty of potential.

Overall it was a fast moving game but too much bad ball handling, notably in the first half some what marred it.  Wynnum Manly will certainly prove a hard side to contend with in 1975.

Three minutes after the break, the Seagulls scored the try of the match.  It was a classic backline try which left the Easts defence standing. The Seagulls won a scrum about 44 metres from Easts line and the ball shot out to Jim Fredericksen who passed to captain John Rhodes who drew the defence and gave his centre, Ron Milne room to move.  Ron Milne spotted the gap and accelerated through to run 40 metres to score out wide.  The conversion attempt failed and Wynnum-Manly led 8-5.

Three minutes later the Seagulls opened the score with a penalty goal to Bob Patterson.  Then Wests were awarded a penalty from a scrum and the goal tied it up at 2-all. For the next fourteen minutes it was all Wests as they had all the ball possession from scrums and penalties.  During this period the Seagulls held Wests out for 30 tackles straight while Wests tried everything to break the stonewall defence of the Seagulls.  Two minutes before half-time Wests hit the front with a penalty and the teams left the field with Wests in front 4-2.

The second half opened up with both teams playing the best football in attack and defence seen at Lang Park for a long time.  In the eighty minute referee Bernie Pramberg gave Wests a gift penalty right in front of the posts and Wests went further in front to lead 6-2.  Three minutes later the Seagulls fullback Bob Patterson kicked a penalty goal and Wynnum was only trailing by 6-4. French referee Franco Escande packs down a scrum as Neil Crausaz watches on

Last Sunday at Lang Park the Wynnum-Manly A grade side downed Easts 16-12 after leading 11-nil at half time.  One of the highlights of the match was the appearance of French referee F. Escande, who was always in control and a real crowd pleaser.

In the eight minute Easts were penalised for being inside the five metres and Peter Inskip goaled to open the Seagulls’ score.  For the next five minutes both sides probed each other for weaknesses and in the 18th minute came the first try. From 15 metres out when four Wynnum players did some quick passing to give Bob Clapham a gap, he put centre John Rhodes over in the corner.  Ten minutes later came the try of the match which swept upfield far about 48 metres. The Seagulls won a scrum and halfback Gary Seaton took the tackle. A quick play-the-ball saw Barry McTaggart put Bob Hardie through the gap and the ever-present Bob Clapham wrong footed the defence to score and Wynnum led 8-nil.

In the 34th minute the brilliance of the Wynnum back line showed out when a long pass from John Rhodes to Ron Milne shot the Fasts defence to pieces and the ball got to Lew Platz who put Keith Smith in for the Seagulls’ third try.  For the next six minutes the defence by both sides was pretty solid and half time found the Seagulls leading 11- all.

The second half found the Seagulls running with the wind and kicking off.  In the eighth minute Easts opened their score with a penalty goal, which seemed to put a bit of fire into their game, as they scored a converted try five minutes later.  With 27 minutes left in the game, it was anyone’s match as there were only four points the difference.

The Seagulls kicked off and through some good, solid defence, kept Easts pinned in their own territory.

In the 23rd minute of play the Seagulls won a scrum 20 metres from the line and second rower Lew Platz scored after three Easts players tried to hold him up over the line, but Ross Nunn gave him a bit of weight and he fell and grounded the ball. Peter Inskip finally converted a try and the Seagulls had a nine point lead.  Five minutes later Easts hit back with a converted try and Wynnum was hanging on to a four-point lead again.

With 12 minutes left in the match and Lasts winning some ball from the scrums, it looked like curtains for the Seagulls, but their defences stood rock hard and they forced Easts into mistakes that cost them two tries.  With the full-time hooter sounding and a scrum packing down in the Wynnum quarter„ the pressure was right on the Seagulls, but hooker Gordon Haigh won the ball and the game was over, with the Seagulls winning 16-12.

Lew Platz trying to find Nev Hornery amongst several Brothers defenders after he scored his second try

Last Monday at Lang Park the Wynnum-Manly A grade side downed Brothers 19-13 to remain third on the premiership ladder after a tight game which was played mostly in the forwards.  Both teams scored three tries and a good crowd of about 11,000 saw the Seagulls kick off to commence the game.

Brothers went straight into the attack and scored a try to lead 3-nil.  Wynnum kicked off again and their defence seemed to tighten up but they still let Brothers run a little – until in the seventeenth minute the Seagulls played really good attacking football.  From about 48 metres out Bob Clapham got away but was stopped short. He managed to get his pass to Neville Hornery, who dived over for a try. Peter Inskip converted and the Seagulls were in front by 5-3.  Two minutes later the Seagulls’ second rower Lew Platz, scored near the posts after a good strong run through the forwards. Then a minute from half-time Neville Hornery put the Seagulls five points in front with a good field goal and half-time found them leading 13-8.

Brothers kicked off to commence the second half and got the ball back after two tackles and a few minutes later they scored a converted try to tie the game up at 13-all.  The Seagulls kicked-off and kept Brothers down in their own territory through some solid defence by both forwards and backs.

In the eleventh minute of play the Seagulls got the ball and really applied the pressure, A few minutes later Wynnum was awarded a penalty for Brothers being inside the five metres, and Peter Inskip kicked a goal to put the Seagulls back in front.  Brothers kicked-off to restart play and some good attacking football saw the Seagulls get back into Brothers’ territory.  A few minutes later Wynnum threw the ball around and Lew Platz made the break after stepping out of one tackle to put Neville Hornery over in the corner for his second try.  In the twenty-second minute of play Neville Hornery snapped another field goal and the Seagulls had a six point lead. With 18 minutes left in the match both sides played it tight in defence.

Alan Stebhens looks to fend away Valleys winger Doug Muir as Roy Robertson watches on

The Wynnum-Manly A grade Rugby League side went down to Valleys 26-21 after being down 12-11 at half time on Sunday at Kougari Oval.  A good crowd saw Valleys kick off and Wynnum go straight on the attack.

In the third minute the Seagulls captain, Neville Hornery, gave Keith Smith a well timed pass to put him in for a try.  For the next 11 minutes both teams played it pretty tight in the middle until the 14th minute, when Bob Hardie scored a fine individual try to put Wynnum in front 6-nil.  Valleys opened their account with a penalty goal in the 17th minute and another in the 25th minute.  Four minutes later the Seagulls were attacking the Valley try line when a Valleys winger intercepted the pass and raced away to score in the corner, which put them in front.

The Seagulls kicked off to restart play and pinned Valleys in their own territory where Neville Hornery put Bob Hardie in for his second try. Peter Inskip converted this one to put Wynnum in front by four points.  With two minutes to go until half time, Wynnum let Valleys score an easy try right under the posts and half time sounded with Valleys leading 12-11.

The Seagulls had their job cut out for them in the second half as they were running into the wind.  Valleys retained their lead when they scored a try in the third minute to lead 17-11.  Wynnum kicked the ball deep to restart play and their defence pinned Valleys down on their quarter line for the six tackles.  The Seagulls won a scrum and not long after the Wynnum back line put centre Ron Milne in for a try. Peter Inskip converted and Valleys had a one point lead.

Then from the kick-off Valleys regained possession and scored right beside the posts and the conversion put them six points in front again.  The Seagulls tightened up their defence, but the damage was done and, even though Valleys didn’t score another try, the goals were the difference, as it was four tries apiece at this stage.  Valleys went eight points in front when they were awarded a penalty right in front of the posts.

With six minutes left in the game the Seagulls played good, attacking football to put their second-rower Lew Platz in for a try. Peter Inskip converted and the Seagulls trailed by three points.  Valleys kicked off and got back possession and kicked a field goal.  From the kick-off Valleys gradually worked back into Wynnum territory and with two minutes to go, kicked another field goal. Round 13 – 28/6/75

Souths 36 d Wynnum Manly 25 (Lang Park)

Peter Inskip kicks the ball down field against Souths at Lang Park, he also had a good day with the boot kicking 5 goals from 6 attempts.

Last Saturday at Lang Park the Wynnum-Manly A grade Rugby League side was toppled by Souths to the tune of 36 points to 25.  The first 40 minutes of this match saw 32 points scored and some of the tries were from brilliant attacking football.

The Seagulls kicked off to commence play and Souths scored a try after only two minutes. She game then settled down into a fast-flowing match and Wynnum did not open their account until the 13th minute when Peter Inskip kicked a penalty goal. Shortly after Souths scored a try because of a bad mistake from the Wynnum fullback and shot away to a handy eight-point lead.  The Seagulls kicked off and Souths backline started to run but the ever present Bob Clapham intercepted a pass to run 48 metres and score under the posts. Peter Inskip converted and Wynnum only trailed by three points.

The Seagulls appeared to be getting on top at this stage and not long after scored two tries in two minutes.  The first of these was a great team effort to put Keith Smith over and he also played a major role in the next one to put Ron Milne in. One of these was converted and the Seagulls were in front 15-12.  Souths fought back and scored to make the halftime score 17-15 in their favour.

The second half opened up with Souths kicking off and through some torrid defence they pinned Wynnum in their own quarter.  Then came one of the most unusual tries ever scored when a scrum packed down 10 metres from Wynnum’s line and the ball came out the same tunnel and flew over the Wynnum line and the Souths halfback dived on the ball and the referee awarded the try.  Not long after this Souths scored again after a doubtful pass and they had a handy lead of 12 points.

In the 13th minute of the second half came a brilliant try by Keith Smith. He ran on to the ball at top pace and seemed to dazzle Souths defence ran around the fullback to score under the posts. Four minutes later replacement halfback Des Lee scored a try under the posts after some good lead up work by Ken Churchill and the Seagulls were back in the game, trailing by only two points.  With 23 minutes to go it was all Souths as they had the ball for most of the time, but could only manage one try. Every time Wynnum seemed to get possession they lost it after a few tackles.

Even though there were 11 points difference in the final score both teams were about even, with the Seagulls scoring two top performance tries. One of these was by Ron Milne in the first half, and the try of the match by Keith Smith in the second half.

Both sides’ goal kickers had good averages with Wynnum’s Peter Inskip landing five from six, and Souths John Graham nine from eleven.  Bob Clapham had a good game as did Barry McTaggart and in the backs Keith Smith played well until replaced in the second half.  There were 11 tries scored and Souths ran out winners 36-25.

Scorers: Souths 36 (B. Muir, M. Brennan, B. Astill, N. Cowell, D. Lange, B. Lynch tries, J. Graham 9 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 25 (K. Smith 2, B. Clapham, R. Milne, D. Lee tries, P. Inskip 5 goals).

Round 14 – 6/7/75

Norths 20 d Wynnum Manly 12 (Bishop Park)

Seagulls five-eighth Bob Hardie had a big game and played his heart out

Last Sunday, at Bishop Park, the Wynnum-Manly A grade Rugby League side went down to Norths 20-12 after leading 12-11 at half time.  Both teams scored two tries a piece but the Norths’ kicker made the difference.

The Seagull forwards could have been on top of Norths but they would not go up to meet them and knock them down. Too many times they let them run instead of tackling them around the legs.

Wynnum kicked off to commence the game and kept Norths pinned down inside their 22-metre and after six minutes received a penalty for Peter Inskip to open the scoring with a goal.

Norths kicked off and got the ball back and about two minutes later received a penalty to tie it up at 2-all.  Five minutes later Norths hit the front with another penalty goal and minutes later scored an easy try through the Wynnum forwards, to take a five-point lead.  In the 20th minute the Seagulls played good football to put Peter Inskip under the posts and he converted his own try to tie it up at 7-all.

At this stage the Seagulls were playing good, attacking football, but their defence needed tightening up.  Five minutes later the Seagulls hit the front with a penalty goal.

In the 27th minute came the try of the match. It started in the Seagulls’ own territory when Bob Clapham split the Norths’ defence up the middle and some good backing-up saw Barry McTaggart take the final pass to score, and the Seagulls had a five-point lead.  Norths hit back with two penalty goals and half-time found the Seagulls in front 12-11.

The second half opened up with both sides playing it in the middle and through some lax in-cover defence Norths scored a try and the conversion gave them a four-point lead.

Both sides went close to scoring tries and the Seagulls’ winger, Warren Orr, showed plenty of class and looked dangerous when he handled the hall. He completely outplayed Norths’ winger and made a lot of ground in attack.  Norths kicked two more penalty goals in this half and held Wynnum scoreless. Norths relied on their forwards a lot and the Wynnum pack did not put them down.  Seagulls five–eighth Bob Hardie had a big match and played his heart out. He was in everything and a number of times broke the line, and tackled well.

Bad handling in Norths’ 22-metre a number of times robbed the Seagulls of tries.  Wynnum’s forwards did not run up the middle hard and when they ran wide they crowded out their backs.  The Seagulls have two good attacking centres and wingers, if the forwards ran up the middle to give them room.  Scrums went Wynnum’s way 14-11 and penalties also favoured Wynnum 16-15.

Scorers: Norths 20 (E. Lilley 2 tries. B. Warwick 7 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 12 (P.Inskip, B.McTaggart tries, P.Inskip 3 goals).

Round 15 – 13/7/75

Wynnum Manly 17 d Redcliffe 13 (Lang Park)

Redcliffe’s Bevan Bleakley Is taken over the top by Don Eagles and around the legs by Lew Platz

Last Sunday at Lang Park the Wynnum-Manly A grade Rugby League side downed Redcliffe 17-13 after leading 12-3 at half-time. Both sides showed some good attack and scored three tries a piece.

A crowd of about 12,000 saw the Seagulls kick-off to start play and Redcliffe went right into the attack and scored a try in the sixth minute of play.  Redcliffe were running with the wind in the first half and looked set to pile on the points, but the Wynnum defence stood up to this attack.

The Seagulls got the ball back and were awarded a penalty for Redcliffe being inside the five-metre mark. Peter Inskip goaled and Wynnum-Manly trailed by one point.  From the kick-off Wynnum-Manly gradually got back into Redcliffe territory with some good attacking football and not long after were awarded a penalty for Redcliffe being off-side.  The goal put the Seagulls one point in front and seemed to lift their attack. For the next five minutes the Seagulls looked dangerous in attack and through some good football were awarded a try when Gary Seaton took the final pass to score.  Peter Inskip hit the post trying to convert this try and the Seagulls were hanging on to a four-point lead.

The Wynnum forwards were playing it nice and tight and kept putting their opposing forwards down and killing any promising Redcliffe move.  Then in the twenty-seventh minute Seagull second-rower Bob Clapham showed a lot of class when he beat about five Redcliffe tacklers to put Bob Hardie in right beside the posts. Peter Inskip converted and the Seagulls had a nine-point lead.  Don Eagle who was having a good game was replaced by Neville Hornery.  No further score was added before half-time and the Seagulls went off leading by 12-3.

The second half of this match saw some very tight defence by the Seagulls, as Redcliffe won the scrums by the enormous margin of 9-1.  Even though there was a big scrum loss the Seagulls got a share of ball possession from the Dolphins’ mistakes and were nearly in for tries on a few occasions.

In the twenty-third minute of the second half winger, Warren Orr, scored a good try after some hard attacking football. The conversion attempt failed and the Seagulls had shot away to a 12-point lead.  Four minutes later Peter Inskip kicked a penalty goal and the Seagulls had the game sewn up.  Then Redcliffe had most of the hall and ran on two converted tries in the last three minutes.

The Seagulls’ prop-forwards Barry McTaggart and Ken Churchill both had good games.  The Seagulls remain in fourth spot, but are now clear of fifth position by four points.  Congratulations go to Ken Churchill on his winning bath the Seiko watch and the George Symons suit.  Congratulations also to Bob Clapham on winning the cassette recorder.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 17 (G. Seaton, B. Hardie, W. Orr tries, P. Inskip 4 goals) defeated Redcliffe 13 (G. McArthur, I. Pearce, T. Obst tries, I. Pearce 2 goals).

Round 16 – 20/7/75

Wests 29 d Wynnum Manly 10 (Lang Park)

Wests on the attack against Wynnum at Lang Park

Wynnum-Manly A grade Rugby League side went down to the tune of 29-10 to Western Suburbs last Sunday at Lang Park. The Seagull forwards allowed Wests to run too much and did not tackle around the legs.  A large crowd of about 15,000 saw Wests kick-off to commence the game, which opened at a fast pace, and the match was only two minutes old when Wests scored a try which was not converted.

Three minutes later Peter Inskip kicked a penalty goal and one point separated the teams.  Then Wests went further in front when they scored a good backline try to make the score 6-2 after 10 minutes of play.  The Seagulls’ defence appeared to tighten up at this stage and they were unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions.  Halfback Gary Seaton was doing a ton of work in defence in the first half, with some forwards backing him up.

There were a few mild flare-ups at this stage as players on both sides threw punches. In the 29th minute Wests scored another try which I believe should not have been allowed, in my opinion one of Wests’ players was offside when he picked up the ball and passed it.

The Seagulls had a fair share of ball possession in the next 10 minutes, but were unable to break the solid defence of the Panthers which held Wynnum tryless in this half.  Right on half-time Wests scored a converted try and went off leading 16-2.

Wynnums forwards let Wests score an easy try just after commencement of play, right under the posts and the Panthers had a 19 point lead as well as the game sewn up.  Four minutes later the Seagulls looked like coming back when hooker Gordon Haigh scored near the posts from an up-and-under by halfback Gary Seaton.  Peter Inskip converted and Wynnum trailed by 14 points.

From the kick-off the Seagulls seamed to come to life for a while and threw the ball around.  They were awarded another try not long after, when Keith Smith scored in the corner.  From this point onwards it was all Wests, but they could only manage one more try and that was in the 32nd minute.  For the last 30 minutes both teams scored two tries and one goal apiece, but the Panthers won this match in the first half when they had scored four tries to nil.

Scorers: Wests 29 (G.Thomas 2, W.Stewart 2, J.Ribot 2, G.Heading trios, G.Thomas 2, W.Stewart 2 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 10 (G.Haigh, K.Smith tries, P.Inskip 2 goals).

Round 17 – 26/7/75

Easts 27 d Wynnum Manly 4 (Lang Park)

Ken Churchill looks to offload a ball

Last Saturday at Lang Park the Wynnum-Manly A grade side was completely outclassed by Easts to the tune of 27 points to four.  The first half saw some tight defensive football by both sides and Lasts scored two tries to lead 8-4 at half-time.

In the 17th minute of play Seagull forward Ian Ogbourne dived under the posts but lost the ball.  It was not until the 21st minute of play when the first score went on the board and that was a penalty goal by fullback Bob Patterson and the Seagulls had a 2-nil lead.  Seven minutes later lasts scored an easy try when the Seagull forwards bunched up and let Easts run and through an overlap scored in the corner. Easts led 3-2.

Then both sides played it mainly in the forwards and a few minutes later the Seagulls took the lead when Bob Patterson kicked a penalty goal to put Wynnum back in front 4-3. Right on half-time Easts scored another easy try when an Easts player was stopped short and flicked the ball back along the ground and another Easts player grabbed it and put it over the line. The try was converted and Lasts went off leading 8-4 at the break.  Easts ran on four tries through some of the sloppiest defence seen from Wynnum for a long time.  None of Easts tries were really brilliant, but they were all scored through the forwards, except the first one.

The first of Easts tries in this half came through an intercept and it was just a matter of running across the line as no one was at home for Wynnum.  The second try came from some short passing amongst two of Easts’ forwards. The third was scored under the posts by an Easts’ forward who was tackled short but managed to put the hall over.

All these tries were converted and Easts had a big lead of 23-4.  The last of Easts’ tries was one of the easiest seen for a long time. An Easts player took a tap from 20 metres out and ran through the Wynnum forwards to score.  Not one of the Wynnum forwards made an attempt to tackle him. With two minutes to go Easts kicked a field goal.

Ian Ogbourne had a good game and never stopped trying.  Gary Seaton was in the clear four or five times but no one ran off him. Captain John Rhodes tried to get his forwards going but to no avail.

Scorers: Easts 27 (J.Lang 2, B.DeBruyn, R.Clark, J.Payne, J.Eales tries; R.Clark 4 goals, G.Holben field goal) defeated Wynnum Manly 4 (B.Patterson 2 goals).

Round 18 – 3/8/75

Brothers 15 d W/Manly 5 (Corbett Park)

Last Sunday at Corbett Park the Wynnum-Manly A grade side went down to Brothers by 15 points to five in a tight defensive match in which tempers flared a couple of times with one all-in brawl.  Brothers kicked off to commence the game and were running with the wind in this half. The Seagull forwards were playing a lot better this week and forced Brothers to make numerous mistakes.

Little impression was made on the defence early, and the first points went on the board in the 10th minute when Bob Patterson kicked a penalty goal.  Five minutes later the all-in brawl started when four Brothers players tackled Lew Platz and threw punches at him.  The fight lasted about two minutes and just after a scrum went down.  Not long after the Seagulls went further in front when Neville Hornery kicked a field goal.  A few minutes later came a good individual try to Brothers.

A scrum packed down 70 metres from the Wynnum line, Brothers won the ball and their lock forward ran the 70 metres to score.  The goal put Brothers in front 5-3.  Three minutes later the score was all tied up when Bob Patterson kicked a penalty goal.  Then right on half-time Brothers kicked a penalty goal to make the half-time score 7-5 in Brothers’ favour.

The second half opened up at a hard, fast pace and in the 8th minute Brothers went further in front with a penalty. Then Seagull centre John Rhodes scored a good try and was penalised for a double movement by referee G. Schofield.  No further score went on the board until the 37th minute when Brothers kicked a field goal and right on full-time they scored a try which was converted, and Brothers ran out winners 15-5.

Scorers: Brothers 15 (G.Thomas, I.Herlihy tries, I.Dauth 4 goals, Harrington field goal) defeated Wynnum Manly 5 (B.Patterson two goals, N.Hornery field goal).

Round 19 – 10/8/75

Wynnum Manly 15 d Valleys 6 (Neumann Oval)

Wynnum Manly tackled their way to a hard fought15-6 win over Valleys in the Brisbane Rugby League match yesterday at Neumann Oval.

Wynnum lead 9-6 at halftime after a converted try seconds before the hooter sounded and finished with an advantage of three tries to one.  Two of Wynnum’s tries resulted from alert second rower and captain Nev Hornery.  He kicked a high up and under near the line which halfback Des Lee pounced on for a try to give Wynnum heir halftime lead.

At the resumption of play Hornery was at it again when he went blindside from dummy half and put winger Warren Hodges over in the corner have Wynnum a 12-6 lead after eight minutes of the second half.

Wynnum’s third try was the best of the match and came halfway through the second half from a movement which started on their own line.  Centre Alan Stebhens and five eighth Jim Fredricksen were prominent before winger Bruce Wadsworth loomed up and showed exceptional speed to outpace the cover defence in a 30 metre dash to the try line.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 15 (D.Lee, W.Hodges, B.Wadsworth tries, B.Patterson 3 goals) defeated Valleys 6 (I.Sommer try, N.Clarke goal, B.McLeod field goal)

Round 20 – 17/8/75

W/Manly 34 d Souths 12 (Kougari Oval)

Bob Patterson gets a ball away despite the attention of Souths players Bruce Astill & Graeme Artherton

Last Sunday at Kougari Oval the Wynnum-Manly A grade Rugby League side completely annihilated Souths to the tune of 34-12 and assured themselves a spot in the finals.

The Seagulls scored two tries in the first half to lead by 16-5 and completely dominated play in the last 20 minutes of the match to run on four tries to one.  The game was only three minutes old when the first points went on the board, and that was a penalty goal to Souths.  Three minutes later fullback Bob Patterson equalised with a goal.

From the kick-off the Seagulls played out the six tackles and a scrum packed down 53 metres from the line.  Hooker Gordon Haigh won the ball and John Rhodes and Ron Milne combined to put second-rower Lew Platz in right between the posts.

For the next 15 minutes both sides showed some stonewall defence and the only points to go on the board were two penalty goals to the Seagulls.  In the 25th minute Souths scored their first try which was an easy individual effort. After this Wynnum tightened up and really settled down to concentrate on football.  Then right on half-time, last minute replacement, winger Tom Redfern, scored a good try between the posts and the Seagulls had a big lead of 16-5.

Souths had pegged back the Seagulls’ lead to only nine points and it looked like being a close tussle, but eight minutes later the Wynnum attacking machine struck and Souths’ hopes were shattered.

Wynnum piled on four tries in the last 17 minutes to run out big winners.  The first one was scored by Jim Fredricksen after some good lead-up work by the Seagull forwards.  Fredricksen scored another try four minutes later from a 30 metre scrum and the Seagulls had shot to a 26-7 lead.

With five minutes to go a scrum packed down and the Seagulls won possession and the ball swept across the Wynnum backline for Tom Redfern to score in the corner.  Bob Patterson kicked a great goal from near touch to convert this try and it was just a matter of how much Wynnum was going to win by.

From the kick-off the Seagulls did not fool around and John Dowling scored after a 70 metre raid which was engineered by John Rhodes and Des Lee. This last try was scored less than a minute after the previous one and the Seagulls had run out convincing winners 34-12.

Tom Redfern had a good game in his first A grade appearance and scored two tries through backing-up.  Barry McTaggart had one of his best games this season.  Bob Patterson banged through eight goals from nine attempts.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 34 (T.Redfern 2, J.Fredricksen 2, L.Platz, J.Dowling tries; B.Patterson 8 goals) defeated Souths 12 (J.Grant, G.Veivers tries; J.Graham 3 goals).

Round 21 – 24/8/75

Norths 22 d Wynnum Manly 7 (Lang Park)

Fullback Bob Patterson had a great game in a losing team scoring a try and two goals

Last Sunday at Lang Park the Wynnum-Manly A grade side went down to Norths 22-7 after it was all tied up at four-all at the half-time break.  The first half of this match saw some stonewall defence and the Seagulls should have scored on a couple of occasions.

This game was only four minutes old when a fight flared up after Norths forward threw punches at second-rower Lew Platz.  The fight lasted two minutes and, after cautions were issued, a scrum packed down. The first points on the board in the 11th minute and that was a penalty goal to Bob Patterson, and the Seagulls led 2-nil.

In the 21st minute, Norths leveled the scores at 2-all with a penalty goal. Centre Ron Milne was replaced by Peter Inskip just after this goal.  The Seagulls got the lead back in the 31st minute from a penalty goal by Bob Patterson and one minute later winger Tom Redfern was replaced by Ross Nunn when he was hurt in an attacking movement that nearly paid off with a try.  Wynnum now led 4-2 and should have scored a try near the posts shortly after when a good attacking movement saw Ken Churchill die with the ball, with Barry McTaggart flying on the outside with no one to beat.  Right on half-time Norths kicked a penalty goal to tie it up at 4-all.

Norths kicked off to commence the second half and scored a try in the fourth minute right beside the posts. The conversion gave them a five-point advantage and it was up to the Seagulls to hit back, but it was not to be. About five minutes later Norths went further in front with a penalty goal and it appeared to be all over.

In the 22nd minute, the Seagulls reduced the lead when they scored a try. The try was scored by fullback Bob Patterson after Peter Inskip gave him a good pass about 25 metres out. At this stage Norths led 11-7 and the Seagulls were in striking distance.  About five minutes later Norths wrapped the game up by scoring three tries in seven minutes to run out winners 22-7. The last three tries that Norths scored were all scored through the Wynnum back line.

Scorers: Norths 22 (T.Trent, S.Farquhar, R.Michaels, W.Hale tries; B.Warwick 5 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 7 (B.Patterson try and 2 goals).

Elimination Semi Final No.1 – 30/8/75

Wynnum Manly 9 d Easts 7 (Lang Park)

John Rhodes speeds downfield with Lew Platz in support

Last Saturday at Lang Park the Wynnum-Manly A grade Rugby League side kept their premiership hopes alive when they knocked Easts out of the knock–out semi-final, in a hard fast game which was always close with both sides producing long, sweeping attacks and rock hard defence.

The Tigers opened the scoring with a very good team try in the eighth minute which swept up field for about 70 metres after a well-placed pass which cut out a couple of players. The conversion gave Easts a five-point lead.  For the next ten minutes the Tigers tried everything to break the dogged defence of the Seagulls but to no avail. Their attack was bogged down so they potted a field goal in the 19th minute to lead 6-nil.

A few minutes later the Seagulls got the ball back and Ken Churchill nearly scored after a good strong run.  From the play the ball John Dowling scored and the conversion put the Seagulls back in the match as they only trailed 5-6.  Five minutes later Lasts kicked another field goal to give them two points lead. For the next 11 minutes until half-time both sides produced plenty of fire in attack and defence.

Easts attempted three field goals early in this half but they all missed, much to the relief of the Seagulls and their supporters. About 18 minutes into this half both sides produced some sloppy play, and there was a lot of dropped ball, with both sides appearing to be slowing down.  Seven minutes later Bob Clapham replaced Ken Churchill.

In the 30th minute the Seagulls were awarded a penalty and a good line-kick put them on the attack. Four minutes later the Seagulls sealed the match with a try in the corner by Bob Patterson, after a 30 metre run.  Two minutes later, with the crowd cheering them on, Wynnum went one point further in front when Bob Patterson kicked a field goal.

Wynnum gradually worked their way back towards Easts’ line and right on full-time had a shot at goal but missed, and they had run out winners 9-7:

Congratulations to Lew Platz on winning the cassette as player of the match.

Scorers: Wynnum-Manly 9 (J.Dowling, B.Patterson tries; Patterson goal and field goal) defeated Easts 7 (G.Holben try; W.Watt goal; J.Payne, G.Holben field goals).

Knock Out Semi Final – 6/9/75

Redcliffe 22 d W/Manly 15 (Lang Park)

Last Saturday at Fang Park the Wynnum-Manly A grade Rugby League side ended its premiership hopes when the team went down to Redcliffe 22-15 in the second knock-out semi-final.

The Seagulls kicked off in front of a crowd of around 12,000, and right from the start both packs of forwards showed plenty of fire with no quarter asked or given.  The Dolphins opened the scoring with a penalty goal in the 15th minute but the Seagulls soon drew level with a penalty goal in the 20th minute.

Four minutes later the Dolphins shot to a five point lead when an up and under led to a try under the posts.  Just after this try, Wynnum edged closer when Nev Hornery snapped a field goal from just inside the 22 metre line.  The Dolphins kicked off with a long deep punt and tackled furiously to keep Wynnum deep inside their territory.  Redclifife led by 9-3 at half-time with one additional penalty goal.

This half produced some exciting, tense moments with everybody on the edge of their seats in what turned into a cliff-hanger. It was anyone’s match until one minute from the finish when Redcliffe scored the winning try.

The Seagulls opened the scoring in the second half with a penalty goal in the third minute and then went to within two points of the Dolphins three minutes later with another penalty goal.  Then two minutes later the Dolphins scored a try but the conversion attempt went wide and Wynnum trailed by five paints.

For the next five minutes Redcliffe applied the pressure but the Seagulls’ defence hung on grimly.   The Dolphins used up their six tackles, a scrum packed down in Wynnum’s territory and the Seagulls won it.  From the scrum, the brilliance of the Wynnum back-line took over and scored the try of the match.  Nev Hornery made the initial break and Bob Hardie and Ron Milne combined to put John Rhodes in for the try.  The movement swept upfield for about 65 metres. Bob Patterson converted and the score was tied up at 12-12.

From the kick-off the Seagulls got back into Redcliffe’s territory and took the lead when Nev Hornery snapped a field goal.  Just after Redcliffe went in front with a try, only to see the scores tied up a few minutes later when Bob Patterson kicked another penalty goal.  The Dolphins went to the front with a penalty goal, then, just before full-time scored a try and with the conversion had run out winners 22-15.

Coach Tom Berry and the A graders have given the Wynnum Club their best year for a long time, and all supporters must be proud of their efforts.  Bob Patterson kicked five goals from five attempts and John Dowling had a good game and ran up 40 tackles for the match.

Scorers: Redcliffe 22 (T.Obst, I.Pearce, B.Gardiner, F.Grayson tries; I.Pearce five goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 15 (J. Rhodes try; B.Patterson five goals; N. Hornery two field goals).
