Wynnum Manly Leagues Club Secretary/Manager Ken Churchill pouring a beer for a patron

Ken Churchill 24, is taking in his stride the responsibility of the football and as secretary-manager of the prosperous Wynnum Manly Leagues Club.

It is an unusual, but prize appointment for this husky 102kg, 193cm former Ipswich second rower.

The job is worth more than $10,000 a year, add about $150 incentive for a win in first grade Brisbane Rugby League fixtures, then young Churchill has plenty going for him.

“I think I’ll be right even when the season get tougher,” he says,  “because I’ve had a lot of practice at these two tasks before.”

“I worked in a hotel bar for experience and then was bar manager of the Seagulls for nine months”.

The Seagulls secretary/manager involves about 80 hours per week.  Then there is two hours training sessions three times a week in addition to these fixtures.

The club has a membership of 2,000, an annual turnover of about $600,000 and with updating soon, it is one of the most progressive sporting clubs in Queensland.  It has a staff of about 15.

Churchill played for Ipswich at 18 years of age and was a member of Booval Swifts, the home club of Easts Tigers skipper Des Morris and front rower Kev Stephens from the premiership side of 1971.
