Brawls were standard throughout the whole game in the third grade grand final
The Wynnum Manly third grade grade rugby league team have been crowned this years premiers, after their grand final victory over Valleys at Lang Park on Sunday.
The final score was five points to nil in the Seagulls favour and was an indication of how rugged and tough the game really was. Shane Chylewski was the Wynnum try scorer with Gavin Clayphan adding the extras.
The game had everything from wild brawls to last ditch try saving defence. Valleys coach Rob Wilson said, “Our plan was to bomb Wynnum fullback Greg Fahey for the total match,” however Fahey did not drop the ball once in an outstanding fullback display, one of the many highlights from the match.
The Wynnum forwards were great in defence with lock Shaun Johnson, and second rowers Neil and Bruce Kingston the best for Wynnum, with Trevor Vass was a standout for the Diehards. It was an all-round great team effort from the team and celebrations are expected to go well into the night.
The third grade side is coached by former first grade coach Tom Berry, joined the team in a lap of honour around Lang Park. Tom, hails from Northern England and played an instrumental part in the victory.
Jim Fredricksen was given the honour of accepting the winners cup on behalf of the players. Jim received the premiership trophy from Miss BRL Shelley Birks who is a student at the McGregor High School with Jim teaches
This is the fourth time Wynnum has won a third grade premiership in the last eight years, winning in 1972, 1975, 1976 previously. Could this be the impetus for a first grade premiership the fans have been craving for almost thirty years.
