Wynnum Manly Rugby League Football Club last Friday night chose its best all time team, since the inception of the club in 1951.

The club put on a special night for the naming of the team, who were presented with specially designed and made jackets each marked Super Gull 82.

The idea originated with local schoolteacher Mr Brian Phillips, helped by a special sub committee to organise the evening.

Brian’s team of helpers were Glen Crouch, Adrian Wiley, Mick Clarke and Fred Stevenson.  Although it was not announced on Friday night the “selection panel” had a little “assist” in the form of former Courier Mail Rugby League writer Jack Reardon.  “We sat down one night for a couple of hours and selected the team,” Brian said.

The team as it was named was Colin Scott, Lionel Morgan, Warren Orr, John Wittenberg, John Dowling, Lou Greenhill, Lew Platz, Gary Seaton, Ian French, Bill McDermott, Bob Hardie, Jim Glass and Keith Brown.

Honoured also were coaches Des Morris and Rex Fox for their great efforts on behalf of the Seagulls.  Paddy Crouch who played for Australia in the 1920’s was also honoured.

Supporters cheered and clapped as each player and ex-player were named.  President Arthur Lovell presented each with their jackets.  Mr Phillips gave a brief summary of each man’s club and rugby league career.

Among the team named were former Australian, Queensland and Brisbane representative players.
