Round 1 – 30/3/97

Wynnum Manly 32 d Souths 14 (Davies Park)

Wynnum produced a convincing 32-14 win over Souths at Davies Park in the first round of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup last Sunday.  Three Seagulls players were forced to miss the game because of the flu, but Wynnum looked untroubled as it headed to a 22-4 Lead at halftime.

Solid play by Brian Hamilton, James Wainwright, Brett Bowman and Kent Larsen helped Wynnum cement its position in the second-half.  Seagull’s executive officer Graham Smith said it was pleasing to see the backline put together five tries.  He said the side had been troubled in recent matches by a lack of cohesion.  In other matches, Wynnum A grade won 16-8 over Souths, while Wynnum Colts lost 20-10 to Souths.

This Sunday, the Seagulls will play Ipswich at Kougari Oval in the first of nine games of the Queensland Cup to be played at Wynnum. Smith is hoping for a return of crowds that turned out to watch local pre-season matches against Wests and Logan at the Oval.

The Seagulls beat Ipswich convincingly in their last meeting at the end of last season. Ipswich was defeated 46-6 by Brothers at North Ipswich Reserve last weekend. Brother’s fullback Damien Seden crossed the line for five tries during the game.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 32 (Brett Bowman 2, Jody Barlow, Brian Hamilton, Jabin Picker tries; Brian Hamilton 6 goals) defeated Ipswich 14 ().

Round 2 – 06/4/97

Wynnum Manly 52 d Ipswich 0 (Kougari Oval)

Wynnum executive officer Graham Smith is expecting “a real test” when the Seagulls take on play Toowoomba at Kougari Oval in the third round of the Channel Nine Queensland Cup on Saturday.

The main game will kick off at 2pm. “Toowoomba is a good outfit,” he said.  “They’ve got a lot of new players the same as we have, and therefore they are a bit of an unknown quantity, but I would be expecting a hard game.”  Last weekend Toowoomba defeated Souths 28-20 at Athletic Oval, while Wynnum downed Ipswich 52-0 at Kougari.

The nine tries were shared amongst Tim Carroll, Jody Barlow, Brian Hamilton, Brett Bowman, Jabin Picker, Johnny Drews and James Wainwright.

Wynnum lock forward Tony Batten, who proved effective in both attack and defence throughout the match, was selected as a reserve in the Brisbane Capitals team for tonight’s clash against the Sydney Metropolitan side at Leichhardt Oval.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 52 (Brett Bowman 2, James Wainwright 2, Jody Barlow, Tim Carroll, Jonny Drews, Brian Hamilton, Jabin Picker tries; Brian Hamilton 8 goals) defeated Ipswich nil.

Round 3 – 12/4/97

Wynnum 24 d Toowoomba 14 (Kougari Oval)

Wynnum gained an early upper hand to produce a 24-14 win over Toowoomba at Kougari Oval in the third round of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup on Saturday.

The Seagulls shot to a 16-0 lead early in the first half following two converted tries to Brian Hamilton and a try by Tony Batten.  Toowoomba replied with a converted try just before half-time to trail 16-6. Wynnum started the second half sluggishly.

Seizing the initiative, Toowoomba forced play deep into Wynnum’s territory and were rewarded with two tries, placing them within two points of the Seagulls. In the last 20 minutes of the game, a revitalised Wynnum side notched up points when a crossfield kick by Brian Hamilton was picked up by Corey Denning for a try.

Wynnum’s Jabin Pickers sealed the win when he penetrated the Clydesdales’ defence with a 40m dash for the line.

This Saturday, Wynnum will play Wests at Purtell Park.  In other Wynnum games, A grade downed Brothers to maintain an unbeaten record in the new season. Brothers overpowered Wynnum Coils 34-10.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 24 (Brian Hamilton 2, Tony Batten, Corey Denning, Jabin Picker tries; Brian Hamilton 2 goals) defeated Toowoomba 14 ().

Round 4 – 19/4/97

Wests 38 d Wynnum 10 (Purtell Park)

Wynnum’s scoreless second half turned their 10-8 slender half-time lead into a 38-10 loss at the hands of Wests in the fourth round of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup at Purtell Park last Saturday.

It took Wests just 10 minutes of the second stanza to add 12 points to their half-time score, pushing them toward a handsome margin.  A Seagulls manoeuvre towards the tryline in the 17th minute came to nought due to an off side ruling.  From then on, Weals dominated the game.

Wynnum executive officer Graham Smith said it was not the first time Wests had turned a half-time deficit into a “second half rout” of the Seagulls.  “Every mistake Seagulls made, Wests made them pay dearly for, and everything Wests tried came off,” he said.

Jabin Pickers scored both Wynnum tries.  Brian Hamilton converted the second, which occurred right on halftime.

Wynnum’s A grade team kept their undefeated record intact, notching up their fourth straight win in the XXXX Cup with an 13-10 victory over Wests. “Glen Polson and Derek Brady are playing consistent football in the forwards, while Darren Filewood, Lance Crook and Danny Baker are performing in the backs,” said Smith.

The Colts broke through for their first win in the premiership rounds, defeating Wests 16-15 with a 40m goal from Alan Finlay inside the last five minutes.  “It was a good effort and with an ounce of luck they should be able to repeat the performance against Wests at home this Sunday.”

“Central is going to be a tough outfit,” said Smith. “They have been playing very good football and they have improved out of sight this season.  “After the way we played last week, our players are going to have to fire up.”

Scorers: Wests 38 () defeated Wynnum Manly 10 (Jabin Picker 2 tries; Brian Hamilton goal).

Round 5 – 27/4/97

Wynnum Manly 26 d Central QLD 4 (Kougari Oval)

Easts and Wynnum fresh from handsome wins at the weekend and lying second and third on the Channel 9 Queensland Cup rugby league table will clash at Langlands Park, Coorparoo, this Saturday.  The teams are preparing for what will be a local derby, with both clubs promising strong performances.

Easts received a confidence boost with a resounding 38-6 victory over Souths at Davies Park on Saturday – the first time the Tigers have beaten the Magpies in three years.  Wynnum cleaned up Central with a 26-4 win at Kougari Oval on Sunday.

Easts’ seven-try hand started when winger Peter Turner scored in the sixth minute.  Seven minutes later, centre Travis Baker added another four points.  Souths fired back in the 23rd minute with their only points of the game, an Ian Turner try converted by fullback Shane Brown.  The Tigers went on to consolidate their lead with two tries by centre Chris Beattie, another from Peter Turner, and tries from Leon Yeatman and Brett MePherson.  Aaron Durant booted seven goals.

Wynnum, stung by a 30-10 loss to Wests less than a fortnight ago, raced to a commanding win over Central.  Central produced their only points when they scored a try 12 minutes from fulltime.  The Seagulls produced five tries and booted three goals.  Brian Hamilton figured strongly, kicking the conversions as well as scoring two of the tries.

Wynnum A grade retained its unbeaten run this season, with a 32-10 win over Wests. Colts won 16-10.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 26 (Brian Hamilton 2, Jody Barlow, Jonny Drews, Jabin Picker tries; Brian Hamilton 3 goals) defeated Central QLD 4 ().

Round 6 – 03/5/97

Wynnum Manly 24 defeated Easts 16 (Langlands Park)

Six goals from the boot of fullback Brian Hamilton helped propel Wynnum to a 24-16 win against Easts in round six of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup at Langlands Park on Saturday. The win puts Wynnum at the top of the rugby league table on 10 points, ahead of Wests and Gold Coast on nine.

Easts were leading 16-8 at halftime. but were unable to finish the task in a match in which both sides scored three tries. Executive officer Brian Smart said: “It was probably one of the best games seen at Langlands for many a year.”

A length-of-the-field try producing run from Seagulls centre Jabin Picker in the seventh minute of’ the second half enabled Wynnum to level the scores.  Picker scored again about 15 minutes later to give Wynnum a 20-16 edge. Two late penalty goals from Hamilton sealed the result.  Wynnum’s other try scorer was Jody Barlow.

Centres Chris Beattie and Jamie Peters, and halfback Brett McPherson crossed the tryline for the Tigers.  Smart said the result was disappointing for Easts.  “We are looking forward however to the possibility of meeting them in the semi-finals and making up for it,” he said.

In the earlier A grade game, it was a similar story for Easts.  After leading 10-2 at halftime, the Tigers lost 18-10. Easts Colts beat Wynnum 34-12.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 24 (Jabin Picker 2, Jody Barlow tries; Brian Hamilton 6 goals) defeated Easts 16 ().

Round 7 – 11/5/97

Cairns 18 d Wynnum Manly 14 (Kougari Oval)

Cairns overtook Wynnum midway through the second half to score an 18-14 win in the seventh round of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup at Kougari Oval on Sunday.  Wynnum’s loss saw them slide from first place on the Brisbane rugby league ladder to fifth on points for and against.

Seagull’s executive officer Graham Smith said, “It is an extremely close competition with eight teams within three points of each other on the table.  “I think it is going to remain tight all the way to the semi-finals.  I had thought that by this stage of the season there would be some teams which would have broken away from the rest.

“That hasn’t happened.”  “I think you will need to win 12 games to make the semis.”

Try-scorers for Cairns on Sunday were Robbie Schmidt and David Maiden.  For Wynnum, it was John Drews, Jabin Picker and Darren Filewood.

Wynnum A Grade beat Easts 24-22 after being down 22-8 with just 15 minutes to play.  “It was a tremendous effort,” Smith said.  “I don’t think anyone gave them a hope in hell of winning that game.”  Easts Colts beat Wynnum 30-18.

Scorers: Cairns 18 () defeated Wynnum Manly 14 (Jonny Drews, Darren Filewood, Jabin Picker tries; Brian Hamilton goal).

Round 8 – 18/5/97

Wynnum Manly 34 d Pine River Brothers 10 (Bray Park)

Wynnum will be looking to wrest the Herald Cup from Redcliffe’s iron grip this Saturday in premier grade rugby league at Kougari Oval.

“This week’s game promises to be a beauty,” said Seagulls executive officer Graham Smith.  “Redcliffe have held the trophy for eight years now and it would be nice to have it back in the trophy cabinet at Wynnum.”

Last year Redcliffe managed to keep the ball alive on the sixth tackle in Wynnum’s 20m zone before Aaron Douglas chipped the ball behind the defence and raced through to claim the match-winning try.  The Dolphins won the game 20-18.

With both teams sharing 12 points in the Channel 9 Queensland Cup competition, it will be a top of the table clash.

The Seagulls produced a 34-10 win over Pine Rivers Brothers at Bray Park on Sunday, while Redcliffe beat Souths 30-4 at Dolphin Oval.  Wynnum’s win was created from six tries and five goals.  PJ Wardle scored two tries the first off a pass from Johnny Drews, who played well in the forwards

The other scorers were Jabin Picker, Brian Hamilton, Brett Bowman and Nathan Croft. With the half-time score at 22-4, the end result was never in real doubt.

The Seagull’s A grade side remained undefeated after a 34-4 victory over Brothers.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 34 (Peter Wardle 2, Brett Bowman, Nathan Croft, Brian Hamilton, Jabin Picker tries; Brian Hamilton 5 goals) defeated Pine Rivers Brothers 10 ().

Round 9 – 24/5/97

Redcliffe 15 d Wynnum 12 (Kougari Oval)

The Herald Cup will remain north of the Hornibrook for yet another year following Redcliffe’s 15-12 win over Wynnum in premier grade rugby league at Kougari Oval on Saturday.  The Dolphins constant attack kept the Seagulls pegged back near their own try-line for much of the top of the table clash in round 9 of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup.

By the game’s end, Wynnum’s tackle count was 300 compared to 217.  Redcliffe fullback Adam Mogg positioned himself well all day to thwart Wynnum’s kicking game.

“We just didn’t have the territorial advantage,” said Seagulls executive officer Graham Smith.  “We you have to tackle a lot more, you don’t have much left in the tank to run with the ball.”  Redcliffe had an 8-6 lead at halftime.

Midway through the second stanza, they managed to extend the margin 15 to 6.

Wynnum front rower Kent Larson seized upon a high kick from Brian Hamilton with less than 15 minutes remaining to bring the score back to 15-10. Fullback Hamilton converted the try to reduce the difference to just three points.  A gallant Seagulls’ charge in the dying phases of the game kept an enthusiastic local crowd on its feet.

Redcliffe’s win sees them skip a point clear on the competition ladder on 14, ahead of Wests, Easts and Gold Coast on 13. Norths and Wynnum are on 12.

.

In A grade on Saturday, Wynnum beat Redcliffe 16-10. Dolphins Colts beat Wynnum 22-16.  At one stage, Wynnum were down 16-0.

Scorers: Redcliffe 15 () defeated Wynnum Manly 12 (Kemt Larsen, James Wainwright tries; Brian Hamilton 2 goals).

Round 10 – 01/6/97

Wynnum 26 d Port Moresby 18 (Port Moresby)

Some good-natured ribbing provided Wynnum Seagulls with extra motivation enroute to creating Queensland Cup history by beating Port Moresby Vipers in Port Moresby on Sunday.  The Seagulls became the first side to beat the Vipers at home with a 26-14 win in humid 33° conditions.

The Vipers won all eight matches at Lloyd Robson Oval in 1996 and had won their three home matches this year before the weekend’s loss.  “I don’t think anyone gave us a hope in hell of winning,” Wynnum executive officer Graham Smith said.  “It was quite funny. We got to Lloyd Robson Oval on Saturday evening to give our boys a look at the ground and give them a light, training run,” he said.  “The ground announcers said that they wished it’s the best of luck, although they thought it was virtually a foregone conclusion.”

Wynnum opened the scoring and reached a 12-0 lead at one stage during the first half before a crowd of about 4000.

“We knew it was a game we had to win. We are still sitting two points of the lead in the competition ladder, and we have Port Moresby out of the way,” Smith said.  “Easts, Redcliffe and Wests have yet to travel there.”

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 26 (Lance Cronk, Jonny Drews, Heath Lewis, Jabin Picker tries; Brian Hamilton 5 goals) defeated Port Moresby 18 ().

Round 11 – 15/6/97

Wynnum Manly 22 d Norths 8 (Kougari Oval)

Wynnum Seagulls hope this Saturday’s rugby league clash against Gold Coast at Pizzey Park will end what has been a tough stretch of matches.  The Seagulls, who last Sunday disposed of Norths 22-8, have had to play competition leaders Redcliffe and Port Moresby on home territory in the past month.

“We always knew this month was going to be tough, all we were aiming for from it was four points,” Wynnum executive officer Graham Smith said.  “If we get two points this weekend, it will be a bonus,” he said.

Gold Coast Burleigh is second on the competition ladder with 17 points following a 36-24 win over Souths at Davies Park at the weekend.  Wynnum are third on 16.

In the remaining games this season, Wynnum will play bottom of-the-table Logan twice and Ipswich.  The other matches are against Toowoomba at Athletic Oval, Souths and Wests.  Smith believes Wests will be the hardest game out of those six matches.

“After this weekend, we have what should be a pretty good run,” he said.  “Of course, on the day any team win.”  “But if you look at the draw for some of the other teams at the top of the table, Easts and Redcliffe have to play each other twice, and both have to travel to Port Moresby.”

In the game against the Devils, Wynnum started quickly, producing 14 points in the first quarter-hour.  Smith believes the team lost direction however after five-eighth Heath Lewis retired injured with rib damage.  Jabin Picker scored three tries, two of which came in the second half. Other Wynnum tries went to Lewis and fullback Brian Hamilton.

Wynnum A grade’s side was beaten 13-12 by Norths, while Wynnum Colts beat Norths 38-28.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 22 (Jabin Picker 3, Brian Hamilton, Heath Lewis tries; Brian Hamilton goal) defeated Norths 8 ().

Round 12 – 21/6/97

Wynnum Manly 32 d Gold Coast-Burleigh 6 (Pizzey Park)

Wynnum rugby league outfit have a strong chance at the minor premiership following a 32-6 win over Gold Coast Burleigh at Pizzey Park in round 12 of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup on Saturday.  With just six matches left before the finals in the 14-team competition, the Seagulls are looking to add to their standing on the ladder with two games against bottom of the table Logan. The draw also includes a match against second from bottom side Ipswich.  The first match against Logan City Scorpions will be played this Sunday at Kougari Oval. The main kick-off is at 3pm.

Wynnum executive officer Graham Smith said: “We’re in a position now to control our own destiny.”  “There is a quiet air of confidence in the club but I don’t think anyone’s overconfident,” he said.  “We missed the semis by a point last season.  “I was surprised to see Ipswich turn around and beat Cairns last Saturday, after Cairns beat hosts at home the week before.

“Sooner or later Logan is going to win a game as well I just hope it isn’t against us. The hard victories we’ve had, such as against Port Moresby in New Guinea, as well as the Coast, will have been for nothing then.”  Logan City executive director Ken Coles acknowledged his team was in for a torrid encounter this Sunday and did not expect to go back to Meakin Park with the two competition points.

“Life certainly won’t be easy for us at Wynnum on Sunday,” he said.  “They are playing very, very well and we will have to try and match that.”  Wynnum is second on the competition ladder on 18 points, behind Redcliffe on 20. Easts are third on 17.

Wynnum’s commanding victory over Gold Coast came as the southerners started strongly in the first half,  Wynnum fought back to create a 22-2 lead at half-time. The final score composed three tries from centre Jabin Picker, and one from winger Lance Crook, winger PS Wardle, and Geoff Hassan.

Norths beat Wynnum A grade 15-8 on Sunday.  Norths Colts beat the Seagulls 32-28.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 32 (Jabin Picker 3, Lance Cronk, Geoff Hassan, Peter Wardle tries; Brian Hamilton 4 goals) defeated Gold Coast/Burleigh 6 ().

Round 13 – 29/6/97

Wynnum 76 d Logan City 0 (Kougari Oval)

TBW

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 76 (Scott Tsaousis 3, James Wainwright 3, Peter Wardle 2, Jabin Picker 2, Julian Garland, Brian Hamilton, Kent Larsen, Jason Predl tries; Brian Hamilton 10 goals) defeated Logan City nil.

Round 14 – 06/7/97

Wynnum Manly 12 drew with Wests 12 (Kougari Oval)

It was all Wynnum in the first half.  It was all Wests in the second in a 12-all draw at Kougari Oval in 14th round of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup.  With each side drawing one point from the result, Wynnum is on 21 points on the rugby league ladder with Easts and Gold Coast behind competition leaders Redcliffe on 22, Wests are on 18.

With just four fixture games left, Seagulls executive officer Graham Smith believes the semi-finalists will need 24 points.  “To be in the top three though, I think you’ll need six if not eight out of eight points from the remaining games,” he said.

This Saturday, the Seagulls travel to Athletic Park to take on last year’s grand finalists Toowoomba.  Smith said the garden city side languishing in 10th spot in the 14-team competition – would be keen to salvage some pride before the season was out.  “They will be hard to beat on their home ground,” he said. “They are a side which plays at a consistent pace for the full 80 minutes.”

At their last encounter, Wynnum beat the Clydesdales 24-14 at Kougari on April 12.

In other Wynnum games at the weekend, the reserves triumphed 30-16 over Logan at Meakin Park. Logan won the colts game 32-4.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 12 (Geoff Hassan, Heath Lewis tries; Brian Hamilton 2 goals) drew with Wests 12 ().

Round 15 – 12/7/97

Wynnum 28 d Toowoomba 16 (Toowoomba)

Wynnum accounted for Toowoomba 25-16 in cold conditions at the Garden City’s Athletic Park in the Channel 9 Queensland Cup on Saturday afternoon.  The Toowoomba rugby league side fought back after being down 22-0 after 32 minutes.

“It wasn’t the best game of football I’ve seen.”  Seagull’s executive officer Graham Smith said.  Five-eighth Heath Lewis opened the scoring with a 25m dash to the right of the posts.  Winger P J Wardle followed soon after with a try for Wynnum, carting three defenders across the line before putting the ball to ground. The Clydesdales scored in the dying moments of the first half to notch up four points before the break.

The win puts Wynnum in second spot along with Gold Coast on 23 points on the competition ladder. Redcliffe leads on 24.  In A Grade at the weekend, Wynnum lost to Easts 14-10. Wynnum colts were beaten 46-16, despite holding a 16-14 lead at half-time.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 28 (James Wainwright 2, Heath Lewis, Scott Tsaousis, Peter Wardle tries; Kent Larsen, James Wainwright tries; Brian Hamilton 4 goals) defeated Toowoomba 16 ().

Round 16 – 20/7/97

Wynnum Manly 30 d Ipswich 24 (North Ipswich Reserve)

Wynnum’s 1982 grand final winning side is being assembled for a return to Kougari Oval this Sunday to witness the Seagulls’ premier grade match against Souths in the second last fixture of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup.  Fifteen years ago, Wynnum thrashed the Magpies 17-3 in the Brisbane rugby league final at Lang Park.

This Sunday is being billed as the Return of the Legends, with the former Wynnum Manly finalists on hand to mingle with spectators to watch Seagulls in action.  The main game kicks off at 3pm.  Wynnum executive officer

Graham Smith said the return of the former squad was set to create a lot of interest.

“When they won the final in ’82, it was the start of the glory years. Celebrations went on for a week down here.” he said.  Wynnum went on to capture the premiership in 1984 and 1986. It was then not until 1995 that the club regained the crown.

This year, Wynnum is second on the ladder behind Redcliffe and are strong contenders for this year’s minor premiership.

The 1982 squad comprised Gene Miles. Colin Scott, Rod Morris, Greg Dowling, Brian Walsh, Gary Seaton, Tony Kambouris, David Green, Warren Green. Brian Battese, Terry Saunders, Brett French, Peter Dawes. Mark Zillman, Sean Johnson, Peter Sibley, Wayne Bullock, Phil Attel, Darryl Jenner and Brad Samuelson.  Smith said that most had indicated they would be able to attend.

The Seagulls were never headed in despatching Ipswich 30-24 at North Ipswich Reserve last Sunday.  In A grade at the weekend, Wynnum defeated Norths 34-15. In Colts, Norths got the better of the Seagulls 32-24.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 30 (Jabin Picker 3, Shannon Grimley, James Wainwright tries; Brian Hamilton 4, Ron Troutman goals) defeated Ipswich 24 ().

Round 17 – 27/7/97

Wynnum Manly 14 d Souths 12 (Kougari Oval)

Wynnum hung on for a 14-12 win over Souths at Kougari Oval in the second-last fixture of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup on Sunday.  Leading 12-2 midway through the first half, the Seagulls faltered as a fired-up Magpies rugby league outfit struck back in the second stanza before a large crowd.

Wynnum executive officer Graham Smith said his side would need to eradicate “silly errors” before the semi-finals.  “The penalties went something like 14-4 against us,” he said.  “We can’t afford to be making silly mistakes like that. You can’t afford to be giving that many penalties away to a side like Redcliffe and still hope to win.”

After three tries in the first half, the only points the Seagulls mustered in the second half came from the boot of Ron Troutman.  Jabin Picker scored two of the Wynnum tries to take his season’s tally to 24.  This Sunday, Wynnum will travel to Meakin Park to do battle with Logan at 3pm, with the memory of the 76-0 drubbing they dished out to the Scorpions five weeks ago still in the minds of supporters. Smith said that Logan would “no doubt” be out to make amends for the loss this weekend.

In A grade on Sunday, Wynnum scored a commanding 32-10 win over Souths. Wynnum Colts fell 32-16 despite a 16-0 lead at half-time.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 14 (Jabin Picker 2, Tony Batten tries; Ron Troutman goal) defeated Souths 12 ().

Round 18 – 03/8/97

Wynnum 30 d Logan City 10 (Meakin Park)

The mood in the Seagulls dressing shed was subdued despite news having just come through that the baysiders had won the Channel 9 Queensland Cup’s minor premiership.  Wynnum had just disposed of Logan 30-10 at Meakin Park on Sunday, and news had just filtered through that Easts had beaten competition leaders Redcliffe 23-22 at Dolphin Oval.

Seagulls executive officer Graham Smith said: “They’re a hard bunch of guys to read. There was no shouting and carrying on.  “The mood in the shed was quiet and reserved. They know they’ve still got a job ahead of them.”

Wynnum, who finished on top of the rugby league ladder with 28 points after 18 fixtures, have earned the right to play the Dolphins at Kougari Oval this Sunday at 3pm.  In the other semis, Wests will play Central at Purtell Park on Saturday at 2pm, and Easts will take on Gold Coast Burleigh at Langlands Park at 3pm.

Smith said that Wynnum supporters were the most vocal in the competition.  “We’re happy to be playing Redcliffe here instead of on their own home ground,” he said.  “Redcliffe always seem to grow an arm and a leg at Dolphin Oval.”

Unbeaten in the past nine games, the Seagulls have the competition’s top try scorer in Jabin Picker, who has crossed the white line 24 times this season, as well as the Cup’s leading points scorer, Brian Hamilton who has booted 64 goals and scored nine tries.

The last time Wynnum and Redcliffe met, the Dolphins ran out winners 15-12 after garnering the lion’s share of possession.  “We had to make about 300 tackles. When you consider that the average for a game is about 200, it is one of the areas we will be sorting out this week,” Smith said.

Wynnum A grade outplayed Logan 46-12.  Logan Colts however virtually reversed the result with a 38-16 win.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 30 (Lance Cronk 3, James Wainwright 2, Heath Lewis tries; Ron Troutman 3 goals) defeated Logan City 10 ().

Semi Final A – 09/08/97 (QLD Cup)

Redcliffe 17 d Wynnum 12 (Kougari Oval)

A big program of rugby league is planned for Kougari Oval this Saturday.  Minor premiers Seagulls stung by their 17-12 loss to Redcliffe at home in a semi-final of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup last Sunday will play Easts at 2pm in their second semi.

The game will precede an Australian versus Great Britain schoolboys Test at 6pm. The Australians whitewashed the British side 50-0 at Port Macquarie in the first Test.  The Queensland quartet of Craig Frawley, Casey McGuire, Bradley Meyers, and Dane Carlaw figured prominently in the win.

In this Saturday’s program Seagulls’ two lower grades line up against Redcliffe.  Seagulls executive officer Graham Smith said there had been little in last Sundays premier grade clash against the Dolphins.

Wynnum looked set to go the half-time break with a 6-0 lead after centre Jabin Picker the competition’s leading try scorer accepted a perfectly timed pass from Heath Lewis to notch up four points.  It wasn’t until right on halftime that Redcliffe squared the ledger by putting up a “bomb,” pounced upon by Dolphins winger Selwyn Toby.

In the second stanza, Redcliffe’s Grant Cleat scored to give the Dolphins the edge. Wynnum fought back when Lewis combined with fullback Brian Hamilton to put centre Brett Bowman over. Redcliffe replied with a field goal by Tony Gould, followed by a try from George Wilson in the corner.

Wynnum A grade beat Wests 38-12 at the weekend, while Colts were beaten 24-20.

Scorers: Redcliffe 17 () defeated Wynnum Manly 12 (Brett Bowman, Jabin Picker tries; Brian Hamilton 2 goals).

Semi-Final D – 16/8/97 (QLD Cup)

Easts 14 d Wynnum 8 (Kougari Oval)

Wynnum are in a “do or die” situation this Saturday against Wests at Kougari Oval in rugby league following losses in the first two semi-finals of the Channel 9 Queensland Cup.  Wynnum fell to Easts 14-8 last Saturday and must will this weekend’s game to remain in the competition.  Easts will take on Redcliffe this Sunday for the third time in eight weeks for the right to play the grand final.  The Tigers hope to make it three-in-a-row over the Dolphins following recent 30-6 and 28-22 wins.

Despite territorial domination, the Seagulls were down 12-4 at half-time to Easts on Saturday.  The visitors put on two points in the first three minutes when Scott Sipple booted a penalty goal from in front of the posts.  The Seagulls missed an opportunity to reply in kind only minutes later.

In the 15th minute, Easts backline combined to send fullback David Smith, replacing the injured Brendan Liston, across for the game’s first try.  Smith, who has not long returned to the field after the reconstruction of his right knee, slipped past Wynnum’s James Wainwright into the clear 5m out from the line.

Sipple, booting from a difficult angle, missed the conversion as the ball shied to the left of the uprights. Wynnum fought back from the kick-off by pinning the Tigers back deep in their own territory.  Julian Garland out leapt two Easts defenders to put down a Brian Hamilton in the in-goal area, pegging the score back to 6-4.

The turning point of the match came however when Easts halfback Brett McPherson scored a 30m try from the scrum base to give the Tigers a handy half-time lead.  Easts had the added advantage of having the setting sun behind them in the second stanza.

Norths 16 d Wynnum 10 (Kougari Oval)

North’s Devils bundled Queensland Cup minor premiers Wynnum Seagulls out of Brisbane XXXX Cup contention with a 16-10 win to Norths at Kougari Oval on Sunday.  The Devils continue to improve in the semi-finals, after having two consecutive wins over teams that had beaten them in earlier rounds, while the Seagulls saw their season end after their fourth semi-final home loss.

Norths fullback Michael Rhodes was the first to break through Wynnum’s defence, scoring a try 12 minutes in. Norths skipper Kieran Meyer added to Norths lead, winning a 60m foot race for another try.

The Devils forward pack again paved the way for Norths attack, with Scott Breen, Tim Kipp and man of the match John Elordi pushing Wynnum’s defence.  Norths had many chances to build a substantial lead in the first half but were forced in touch within metres of the goal line.  Wynnum scored a converted try with five minutes remaining in the half thanks to Heath Lewis, to bring the score to 10-6 at the siren with Norths in front.

Both teams came out determined after the break and, in what had to be the play of the game for Norths, a Meyer pass hit Kevin Carmichael in the face, stopping Wynnum’s defence as they assumed it had been a knock-on. But referee Darren McKenzie judged it was not and Carmichael picked up the ball and scored, taking the lead to 16-6.

Wynnum, led by forward Jason Wainwright, scored a try a few minutes later when centre Corey Denning crossed the line.  Despite breaking through Norths front row a number of times in the second half, the Seagulls could not manage to break away from Norths defence.

Wynnum executive officer Graham Smith said the season’s end had been a disappointment.
