Round 1 – 3/5/52 

Norths 30 d Wynnum Manly 10 (Oxenham Park)

Wynnum Manly’s attempts to get their season off to a strong start failed when Norths put the cleaners through them, winning 30-10 at Oxenham Park.

Souths five-eighth George Atherden and halfback Ron Greenwood were the driving forces behind the Norths attack, cutting the Wynnum defence to ribbons with Greenwood scoring a double and setting up one of his teams six tries.  Warren had a great day with the boot kicking six goals.

Whilst Wynnum never gave up, they were just simply outclassed by a better side, with Norths experience proving the difference.

One highlight for the Baysiders was Brian Phillips, he was everywhere and consistently caused the Norths defence issues every time he touched the ball.  

Souths Ron Greenwood was player of the match.

Round 2 – 5/5/52 

Easts 38 d Wynnum Manly 14 (Davies Park)

Wynnum fullback Noel Townsend kicked four goals for the Baysiders

In a stunning performance Easts had a thumping victory over their archrivals Wynnum Manly 34 points to 18 at Davies Park.

Easts National Service trainee Don Baker scored an incredible five outstanding tries, that had club officials scurrying for the record books.

Baker’s tries were the result of great scrum work by halfback Ken Booth who continually cut the defence, to set the backline in motion.

Wynnum Manly do not seem to be playing as a team at the moment, with players dropping off tackles, this is an area they will need to improve on.

Baker and Booth were the standouts for Easts.  Wynnum prop Charlie Roff was the best for Baysiders.

Round 3 – 10/5/52 

P/Brothers 42 d Wynnum Manly 6 (Oxenham Park)

Wynnum Manly slumped to their third straight defeat when Brothers defeated them 42-6 at Oxenham Park.

The crowd witnessed on of the best individual display from a player when Brothers hooker Ken Fogarty tore the Wynnum Manly team apart at Nundah.  Besides winning the ball from the scrums overwhelmingly, Fogarty figured in every Brothers try and scored a double himself.  His defence was also a highlight as he tackled like a bulldog.

Brothers were the far superior team and receiving a lion’s share of the ball the Brothers halves McNamara and O’Malley ran riot for most of the afternoon.  O’Malley scoring a trifecta of tries.

For Wynnum it was the same story as previous weeks with some solid performances from fullback Brian Phillips, halfback John Platt and winger Sonny Christensen, whilst in the forward Charlie Roff and Richard Lachlan tried hardest.

Round 4 – 18/5/52 

Wynnum Manly 21 d F/Valley 16 (Kitchener Park)

Wynnum Manly centre Henry Seaton caused headaches for the Valleys defence

The beer was flowing in households in the Wynnum district last night, when Wynnum Manly caused one of the biggest upsets of the weekend fixtures when they defeated valleys in front of their home crowd at Kitchener Park. 

It was the Baysiders first win of the season fielding their strongest side this year with Henry Seaton causing chaos throughout the match for the Valleys defence.  Wynnum thoroughly deserved their win scoring five tries to Valleys four.

The match up between rival halfbacks Jim Glass and Valley Bradley was worth the price of admission with Bradley just shading out his Wynnum counterpart.

Wynnum Manly’s best players were Glass, Seaton, Sonny Christensen in the backs with Charlie Roff and Keith Blackford the best of the forwards.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 21 (M.Patterson, H.Seaton, S.Christensen, K.Blackford, J.Glass tries; B.Phillips 3 goals) defeated Valleys 16 (Bradley 2, Barnett, Ball tries; Lesina 2 goals).

 

Round 5 – 24/5/52 

Souths 30 d Wynnum Manly 6 (Davies Park)

Souths played their best game of the season with a crushing victory over the improved Wynnum Manly side 30-6.

Both sides were rugged in defence with Souths holding a slender lead of 3 points to 2 at the halftime break.  It was expected that we would have a close match, but two different sides came out onto to the field after the break.

Souths rallied in the second half with Tony Tyquin scoring a treble, this was helped considerably by the amount of ball won in the scrums by Johnson.

For Wynnum Jim Glass was their best player.

Round 6 – 31/5/52 

Wests 65 d Wynnum Manly 14 (Gabba – B.C.G.)

Wynnum Manly were taught a football lesson when they met with Wests at the Gabba when they were beaten 65-6.

Wests scored 15 tries in all, ten by the wingers McPherson (6) and McPherson (4), luckily for the Baysiders Mohr’s radar was off and he only kicked 9 gaols from 15 attempts otherwise it would have looked ever worse.

Wests walked into the dressing rooms at halftime with a 35-7 lead and added another 30 points against the wind in the second half.  They frequently cut holes in the opposition defence, Alec Watson being able to break through at will.  Wests best forward was Dempsey.

Abby Thurlow really has his work cut out, as he tries to build confidence back into his team.

Round 7 – 9/6/52 

Wynnum Manly 15 d South Coast 3 (Oxenham Park)

Wynnum Manly fans went home happy after the Baysiders broke through for their second win of the season when they defeated South Coast 15-3 at Oxenham Park.

Wynnum scored three tries to one, with hooker Richard Lachlan being an absolute standout in defence and attack.  Lachlan also topped off a great game by winning 75% of the ball in the scrums which set up the likes of Jim Glass and Brian Thistlewaite to run rampant against the South Coast backline.

They were both rewarded with a try each with Charlie Roff being Wynnum’s other try scorer.  Brian Phillips kicked three goals.

Wynnum had many standout players including Lachlan with Vince Long, Glass and Thistlewaite causing trouble for the South Coast. South Coast. Brough was the best for the opposition.

Round 8 – 22/6/52 

Wynnum Manly 6 d Norths 4 (Kitchener Park)

Wynnum hooker Richard Lachlan was Wynnum’s best

Wynnum made it three wins for the season when they defeated Norths 6-4 in a tough encounter at Kitchener Park.

Wynnum Manly dominated the scrums in the first half which resulted in two first half tries to in form halfback Jimmy Glass and centre Sonny Christensen.

In the second half the Norths forwards took charge, however, were unable to penetrate the Wynnum defence and remained try less for the match with only Johnson kicking two penalty goals.

Best players for Wynnum were Jim Glass, Vince Long, and Richard Lachlan.  For Norths Davies, Atherden and Green were outstanding for the losing side.

Scorers: Wynnum Manly 6 (J.Glass, S.Christensen tries) defeated Norths 4 (Johnson 2 goals).

 

Round 9 – 29/6/52 

Easts 8 d Wynnum Manly 5 (Kitchener Park)

Wynnum Manly had high expectation to make it three in a row at home but fell short when they were defeated by Easts 8-5 at Kitchener Park.

Heavy rucking was the main feature of the game and at times the referee lost control with both sides figuring in firey play.

Merv Polley and Jack Warburton in the forwards and Allan Poole in the backs were outstanding for Easts.  Brian Phillips, Brian Thistlewaite and Johnson were the best for Wynnum.

Scorers: Easts 8 (J.Warburton, M.Polley tries; A.Poole goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 5 (C.Roff try; B.Thistlewaite goal).

 

Round 10 – 5/7/52 

P/Brothers 21 d Wynnum Manly 14 (Gabba – B.C.G.)

Brothers winger Don Alroe scored three half the length tries when Brothers defeated Wynnum Manly 21-14 at the Brisbane Cricket ground.

Alroe scored four of his teams five tries which were all the result of opportunism.

Wynnum hooker Richard Lachlan won a share of the ball for his side with the Brothers side missing their hooker and strike weapon Fogarty, who is overcoming injury.  As a result, they lost the scrums 29-19.

Wynnum played well in patched however their ball control let them down.

Dick and Hoare were very good in defence and Fallon was the best of the Brothers forwards.  For Wynnum Jim Glass continued to have a stellar season, with Patterson and Lachlan dominant in the forwards.

Scorers: Brothers 21 (D.Alroe 4, Slater tries; Dahl 3 goals) defeated Wynnum Manly 14 (J.Patterson, A.Birks tries; Birks 4 goals).

 

Round 11 – 12/7/52 

Wynnum Manly 25 d F/Valley 23 (Oxenham Park)

Wynnum Manly recorded their fourth win of the season defeating Valleys 25-23 at Oxenham Park. They are proving to be a tough proposition for all team as the season progresses.

Valleys made too many errors and the Baysiders took a 15-12 lead into the break.  Jim Glass is one to watch for Wynnum and was rewarded with a try scoring double in the first half. 

Valleys lacked finish and made unforced errors to come away with a victory, with Wynnum being the better team throughout. 

Wynnum Manly’s best were Jim Glass, Len Johnson and Sonny Christensen in the backs and Charlie Roff, Jim Patterson and Richard Lachlan in forwards.  For Valleys Barnett, Bradley, Ball and Sims all played strongly.

Round 12 – 19/7/52 

Wynnum Manly 15 d Souths 12 (Gabba – B.C.G.)

The Baysiders made it two wins in a row when they defeated Souths 15-12 in a closely fought contest at the Brisbane Cricket Ground.

The match was locked up at 12 all with ten minutes remaining, however a late try to Wynnum Manly centre Sonny Christensen sealed the match.  Alf Rundle was great in general play and added three goals for Wynnum.

Wynnum Manly were the far better side on the day, with five-eighth Johnson again proving to be the difference between the two sides.  Wynnum were the better side on the day and deserved their victory.

The improvement in the Wynnum side has been a real feature of the BRL competition as they take on Wests next weekend at the Gabba with high hopes.

Round 13 – 26/7/52 

Wests 41 d Wynnum Manly 15 (Gabba – B.C.G.)

The Baysiders came crashing to earth when they were taught a footballing lesson by Wests, going down 41-15 at the Brisbane Cricket Ground.

Wests struck early opposition form Wynnum Manly early in the match but ran away with it in the closing stages of the first half.

Wynnum Manly lost halfback Jimmy Glass early in the first half and Wests finished the match with only 11 men after losing wingers McPherson and O’Brien to injury.

Forward Charlie Roff and Vince Long were the best for Wynnum and Wests five eighth Livingstone prominent through the match.

Winger Keith McPherson scored another three tries and took his season tally to 21.  West fullback Pat Mohr kicked 7 goals from 9 attempts.

Round 14 – 2/8/52 

South Coast 25 d Wynnum Manly 14 (Davies Park)

The South Coast team finished strongly in the competition when they defeated Wynnum Manly 25-14 at Davies Park.

The game was close than the scores indicated with South Coast scoring five tries to four, however Wynnum only had one successful conversion.

Wynnum also played the last 15 minutes of the match without their hooker Richard Lachlan after tempers frayed and he was sent from the field by referee Casey.

The best players for South Coast were Brough and Golder and for Wynnum Charlie Roff, John Platt and Vince Long shone throughout.

Scorers: South Coast 25 (Brough 2, Ryan, Golder, E.Millard tries; Smyth 2, Kindelon 2 goals, Luscombe field goal) defeated Wynnum Manly 14 (R.Robinson, C.Roff, V.Long, J.Platt tries; J.Patterson goal).
