
Wynnum Manly star Lionel Morgan in full flight for Brisbane in a Bulimba Cup match
Lionel Morgan joined the Wynnum Manly Football Club from the Tweed All Blacks in 1959, the year Wynnum Manly won it’s first ever trophy “The President Cup”.
Morgan was the first indigenous player to represent Australia against France in 1960.
He played in over 150 First Grade Matches for the Wynnum Manly Club and still holds the try scoring record for six tries in one match against Souths in 1964 at Davies Park.
When Kougari Oval was opened for its first match in 1967, Lionel has the distinction of scoring the first ever try scored at Kougari. Lionel was also the Captain/Coach of Wynnum from the years 1965 – 1967.
Lionel Morgan also had a wonderful representative career and was Wynnum Manly’s first ever Australian representative in 1960 when re-entering the competition from 1951.

Scored two tries (one on debut) Including the Brisbane test which Australia won 56-6
Member of the 1960 World Cup Side
Played 16 games for Queensland 1960 – 63
Member of Qld’s winning 1960 series against NSW, and the drawn series in 1961
Played in match Qld won 13-0 against NSW (only 2nd time NSW kept scoreless)
Member of the Qld & South Qld sides which defeated South Africa in 1963
Scored all Qld’s points against touring New Zealand side in 1963 (2 tries and 2 goals)
Morgan’s kicking credited with Brisbane winning 15-12 against touring French side in 1960
Played in many Bulimba Cup victories for Brisbane
