The Wynnum Manly Rugby League Bobblehead Doll

It all started in the 17th century when figurines of Budda and well known identities called temple nodders, were produced for the Asian market.

The western reference to these figures was called bobblehead dolls or noblers in the 1950’s.  The American baseball league produced a series, one for each team and over the next decade the phenominin exploded.  Bobblehead dolls were then introduced into different sporting markets throughout the world, as a way of letting everyone know what team you supported.

The Brisbane Rugby League decided in 1966 to launch their own set of bubblehead dolls, with each of the eight Brisbane Rugby League clubs featured.  The dolls were made of ceramic/plaster and the neck of the doll would move and bobble when touched. These dolls proved to be extremely popular with the Brisbane Rugby League community in the late 1960’s.  However due to ceramics being easily broken, these bobblehead dolls have become extremely difficult to acquire.

Brisbane Rugby League bobble head dolls fetch anywhere up to $1500 each in good condition on internet buying sites.

I was lucky enough to find one of these bobblehead dolls at the home of Don Walker, a long time supporter and former board member of the Wynnum Manly Football Club.
