A great crowd of 2,500 people packed into Wondall Road Oval last Friday night to witness a polished display of football by our southern counterparts, Manly-Warringah.

Led by ex-Queensland international, John McDonald, Manly-Warringah completely outclassed a makeshift local team and gave the spectators an example of Rugby League at its best.

The Wynnum Manly team capably captained by Gary Dobrich, held for most of the first half.  However, numerous changes to the local side destroyed any semblance of combination and Manly-Warringah, with eight international players, dictated the trend of play in the second half to win the match 46-6.

Although a one-sided affair, this match was a great finale to the season and the Wynnum Manly club and the Old Boys Association are to be congratulated on presenting such a spectacle for the supporters of the district.

The visiting team is to be complimented on playing to win, instead of merely making an appearance on the field and the supporters received real value for their money with the Sydney style of football.

The success of this venture should assure a similar game at the conclusion of the 1970 season and regardless of Wynnum Manly’s standing on the premiership table, this game, if properly publicized, should draw an even larger crowd to the headquarters of the Wynnum club, the Wondall Road Oval.

Rugby League is, without a doubt, the number one sport in this district and games such as this will serve to boost the prestige and the finances of the club to greater heights.
