The Wynnum Manly Rugby League Cheer Squad had no idea at the start of the 1978 season, that they would all have the opportunity to represent Australia. The group was asked by the Brisbane Rugby League to be the cheer squad for the Australian team for the second test match held at Lang Park against New Zealand.

It was deemed by the Brisbane Rugby League officials that the best cheer squad during this season was the Wynnum Manly girls, thus the reason they had this honour bestowed upon them.

Former Wynnum Manly cheergirl Donna Thomson recalled, “Cheering for Australia was so awesome, the atmosphere and the crowd was just something else, it was one of the most memorable years of my life.”

Ida Christensen was responsible for the Wynnum Manly Cheersquad and organised all the outfits, pom poms and catch cries that the girls would utilise on game days.

Two of their favourite catch cries which many supporters could here echoing around Lang Park and suburban grounds were:

Two – Four – Six – Eight,

Who do we appreciate,

Wynnum Wynnum, yeh Wynnum.

Thunder Thunder, Thunderation,

We are the Wynnum delegation,

Hit them high,

Hit them low,

Come on Wynnum, Go, Go, Go.

It was fun times for all involved in the Wynnum Manly Rugby League Football club and these Wynnum girls represented their local district proud.
