Greg Street looking at building a formidable centre combination with Noel Tierney

Wynnum Manly centre Greg Street’s first grade debut in 1985, was against one of the classiest centre combinations of the decade.

Street came on as a replacement for the Seagulls against a Dolphins outfit which boasted Tony Currie and Mitch Brennan as the centres.

Currie now with the Broncos has gone on to represent Australia while Brennan, a Queensland State of Origin representative has retired from league and taken up American Football.

Street who managed to score a try against the formidable duo, is still young by league standards at 23, but he is regarded as one of the veterans of the Seagulls backline.  The Alexander Hills based builders labourer has been with Wynnum since he finished his junior career with the Redlands under 17’s.

He told rugby league news he had contemplated joining Easts but eventually he settled on the Seagulls a decision he has never regretted despite the tough times of recent years at the Bayside.  As a junior he represented Brisbane and during his progress to the firsts at Wynnum he managed to win the best reserve grade back award

An automatic choice for the first grade in the last two years, Street has not missed a match through injury, statistics he puts down to fitness and technique.  At 75kg he is not a big centre by modern standards, but he has worked hard during the off season in the gym with Wynnum Manly team mate Peter Jones.

Street is looking forward to building a formidable centre combination with Noel Tierney who was unlucky to miss out on a contract with St George, where his younger brother Neil is playing.

Consistency is Wynnum’s goal in 1990 – they can play marvellous attacking football as they showed for most of the woollies preseason match against Norths.  But they also can lack professionalism as they showed in the dying minutes of the match and in the following weeks encounter with Logan City.

“Our coach Brian Walsh is professional, we have to be the same way,” Street said.  Wynnum play Wide Bay at Bundaberg today and Street says a win is only a way to make the five hour bus trip back to the Bayside bearable .
