The Wynnum Manly Seagulls Rugby League Football Club helped promote ‘Men’s Health Week’ when they played the Ipswich Jets at BMD Kougari Oval in June, 2008.  Scheduled as the ABC match of the round game it was broadcasted live at 2pm and as a curtain raiser the club organised a legends game to help raise awareness of Men’s Health Week which ran from June 9 to June 15.

The Men’s Health Legends game featured the Wynnum Manly All Stars against the BRL All Stars.  Both teams contained some of the great players involved in the early days of the Brisbane Rugby League and will be played under Masters Rugby League rules. Apparel manufacturer, Triple Play have sponsored the teams with the full playing kit which all players will keep as a memento of the day.  Wynnum Manly will wear a Retro style design similar the one worn by the club this year. The BRL All Stars will wear the traditional Brisbane Rugby League strip worn by representative teams of the past.

The aim of Men’s Health Week is to get men in rural areas alerted to the importance of looking after their health. Shockingly, men living in rural areas have a shorter life expectancy than men in metropolitan areas due to lack of awareness. The three key health issues of this campaign are prostate, testosterone and mental health.  The aim was to highlight that sometimes there’s more to looking after oneself than just a visit to the doctor and eating healthy.  Having a drink down at the pub with your mates is a good way to unwind after a hard at work. This is why social sporting events such as the Legends game are a great way for men to relax whilst looking after their health.

This was a fantastic promotion and a great way to promote Men’s Health Week.  The Men of League Express will be making a special trip out to BMD Kougari Oval for the day with the highlight being the All Stars curtain raiser.  The Wynnum Manly Seagulls have nominated the Men of League Foundation were the designated Charity for funds raised on the day.
